It happened again.. I have an outstanding memory. I can name every peak of every major mountain range in the world. You would not believe me if I told you how many digits I can recite pi to. I can recite endless batting averages, rattle off strings of numbers that I saw an hour ago, etc.. This stuff just comes to me but there is one thing that has always been my kryptonite when it comes to my amazing memory: capitals. State, national, whatever.. just about any time it comes to capitals my brain just locks up.
The first time this really got me big time was at the '94 Academic Decathlon National Championship. I had that thing IN THE BAG when the last question pops up - Capital of Mauritius? I couldn't come up with it but some dork in penny loafers and a popped colllar from Taft High out of L.A. could and I looked the fool that day.
Later in '01 it happened again - this time I was competing on a regional TV game show in China. In front of 200 million or so people I totally froze on the capital of Anhui province. Seriously?? Needless to say I did NOT walk away with the bag of Maojamins that day. Some kiwi from Harbin did.
That brings me to what happened the other day -
I'm sitting in the lounge talking to this new employee. I can tell she's pretty impressed with all of my memorization feats - so far it's lookin' good - I can tell that she's already leaning towards acknowledging me as the alpha male around here. I've seen the look many times. Mission accomplished, right? Not so fast - in comes the guy that you could call my "nemesis" at my place of employment. Dude thinks he's hot snot but I know better. He's all show.. he drives a pretty sweet '85 Fiero that he allegedly restored himself and he has a pony tail but he can only recite pi to like 120 decimal places or something. Total bush league. I think he has discovered my weakness though because just as I'm about to spout off every major world series winner since 1920 he butts in with, "You know where I'd like to visit? The capitol of Croatia.. hey, man, what's that city called again?" He looked straight at me with these eyes that were just overflowing with smug satisfaction. "I only sat there and mumbled... uh I forget..dude."
"Oh yeah, Zagreb." He says with a chuckle. I wanted to punch him right in the bottom button of his fancy cardigan but I just slinked out red in the face. Total humiliation.
Anyone else struggle with this?
