Fretless 5 String Competition - Simnett Guitars

Dude! That sucks! I am totally diggin' the elegant simplicity of your entry! I wish you didn't have to back out, maybe there can be an extension. It was mentioned sometime earlier.I am sure that the other competitors would agree. Either way, this has been a beautiful escape and learning experience! Thanks for all you do.

Thanks very much :)

Shame Simo, yours has my vote. Such amazing workmanship, and the body design has grown on me now that it's assembled. Hope you keep updating the thread. When's the deadline, anyway? I'm still not done, either.

The deadline is the 31st as far as I'm aware.. so only 3 days left ;)

IMO there should be an extension. You guys decide what's fair. I am sure everyone would agree, including those who'll finish on time. Even the winner would probably feel bad if some of the builds didn't make it to the final line up. Please guys, make yourselves heard Anyway, FWIW I vote for an extension ;)

Here's a few more pics.. the Mahogany has really popped under the Tru-Oil :)

Nice! I'm using tru-oil for a project right now.

How much of the stuff have you used on the body? I bought just the 8oz bottle, and I'm hoping it's enough for a whole bass+neck. I'm not going for a super-high-gloss finish, but I'd like to protect the wood from finger funk.

An 8oz bottle should be plenty to do a body & neck.

Hey, that looks great. Which application method did you use for the tru-oil?

I simply wipe it on with a rag, making sure I remove excess oil, leave it to dry for a few hours, lightly sand it with some 0000 wire wool and repeat. When it's time for the last few coats I'll thin it out 50/50 with mineral spirits. There's a few methods that I've read on the 'net, I know that some people prefer to use fine wet & dry instead of wire wool for a high gloss finish.. I'm going for a more semi-gloss look for this build but I can see how with some grain filling and buffing you could get a very high gloss finish.

Long time, no update!... I had hoped that the 1 month extension would give me more than enough time to finish, but as it turns out I've just spent the last 3 weeks working for my brother, I've barely stepped foot in the workshop during that time, so I'm afraid I'll have to bow out of the competition, as realistically it'll be another 2 weeks until I'm finished. I'll post some pictures once I've made some more progress, so stay tuned for updates ;)

And well done to everyone who has taken part (and unlike me, finished in time :p), the standard of work shown in this competition has been very high :bassist:

Simo, the voting thread will be running to the end of the month, so there will be time to at least toss some pics up in the final thread so we can have everyone(finished or not) in the final thread, we all had fun, and should all share in the completion of the build. I didn't finish either, but the business comes first...LOL fat guy needs food....LMAO:p So try to get some pics in the final thread, I want to try to make a collage for the end of May. Good luck with everything your builds are great to watch.;)
