Fretless Bass With ONE FRET???

When I went to the Rock and Roll hall of fame a few years ago, they had a bass in one of the exhibits that had a single fret in the middle of the board, but I've never seen one with it at the end.

What on earth would one in the middle do but ruin the bass? LoL
