Fretted Fretless

Your bass, OP. You do you. But ask yourself this: why don't people do this more often?
Because, you know, people don't do this.

Is this idea as innovative as a lightbulb or prehistoric hunting practices? Hell, go for it. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's the best way to turn a fretted into a fretless. What it's definitely not is simultaneously a fretted and a fretless.

They had a problem to solve and theories backing them up. Do you have either?

I don't build anything. I've neither the skills nor the desire. I don't make movies or music or cars or pens. Doesn't mean I can't criticise them. But I'd I'd love to see your builds. I wanna watch.

I suspect you'll be like, 'huh, it's a fretless now,' but I've done worse to a bass trying to make it neat, so have at it.

I follow this luthier on Youtube and yes it is a real thing. Fretted to I believe the 7th or 8th fret, fretless the rest of the way. Interesting how the fretboard was constructed, having to raise the level of the fretless side to help ease the playing transition from the height of the frets on the fretted end.

Super cool finish too.

Technically, the answer to your question is no. If you bass still has frets, it is not fretless, regardless of how inaccessible those frets are under the layer of epoxy.

Don't know.

Expiremented with a fretless board that had been undercut so that o-ring stock was used, leaving about .035 reveal protruding.

Back in the day there was a company that made a neck or maybe even whole basses where the fretboard was held on by magnets and you could switch between fretted and fretless boards. I've never seen one in person or a video of one, I only remember the ads in Guitar Player. This was before Bass Player and waaaaaay before YouTube.

I played around on one of these. It had 4 boards i seem to recall. The neck was thick like a baseball bat...LOL.

I really wanted to try one but I was in high school when they were whatever amount of available they ever were then long gone by the time I had money to try silly things. Oh well.
