from a foreigners perspective :-)

Yes I've read those articles, and they do nothing but repeat what I've already said. Exposure to microwaves is dangerous. Thats indeed clear, heating your body using microwaves is very dumb. As far as heating food with microwave is concerned, all that study shows is that you may gain cholesterol, there is no talk of cancer, there is nothing telling you how much food you have to process and at what kind of rate you have to process it for these results to actually be a danger to your health.

As for the cigarettes = cancer argument, thats also a bunch of crap. Sure, if you smoke, you're more likely to get lung cancer, but again, there is no scientific PROOF that smoking will, in the long term, give you cancer. The distinction should IMO be made here. It is NOT cigarette smoke that gives you cancer, there hasnt been anything proved on that, but cigarette smoke does affect your lungs enough to make you liable to have lung cancer. Correlation of numbers and statistics are nothing but garbage, again IMHO. Living life according to statistics is denying yourself the freedom to say what the hell, im in a hurry, im heating up that junk and gettin a move on it.

A better anology:

Jumping out of an airplane without a parachute won't kill you. Hitting the ground at 120 miles an hour will.

it's a southern thing. ain't no good gas station food for me now that i'm back home in the north.

my chili (and most of my soups) are better the second day. i store them in the refrigerator and reheat them on the stove. the microwave is for cook malt-o-meal (wheat farina) and oatmeal. i also like healthy food like [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] or [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] for lunch at work in the microwave.

robb.

I am so thankful to be Southern just now! ;)

Yep...chili's better the next day. So is King Ranch Cassarole. So is turkey dressing (not stuffing!) :smug:

Cherie :)

So why do you all think you know better than reputable scientists and experts in the field ....:hmm:?

Personally I just see no need to rush my food and would rather take my time - but I am amazed at how people are so dismissive about health risks....:hmm:

A scientist gets more funding the more his discoveries are "important". I always read those results very thoroughly, and always take em with a grain of salt, unless the way to expose the evidence is actually done clearly without trying to turn something not important into something that looks to be more important than it really is.

I would like to not have to rush, and take my time, and usually I do, but I'm a student, I'm on a schedule and I need to hurry sometimes. Other times though, I admit, I'm lazy and the microwave comes in handy in such situations. I certainly dont overuse my microwave though, and I doubt moderate use to heat some things will cause harm to my health, and will keep thinking this way until I see conclusive evidence of the contrary.

I agree with you, taking time to cook = better tasting food, and probably more healthy as well, but not everybody has all the time in the world to cook some Coq au vin everytime they're hungry ;)

I understand that any food left out for 2 hours isn't not very safe to it. You can eat it, but you're taking a higher risk. General when there are leftovers around my house, the food is cooked and we know right away what is not going to be eaten, so it's put into the fridge right away. A half hour tops if we do it after we eat, and if it's covered, generally it's still a bit warm from having recently been cooked.

As for restaurants, most of the time from when we eat to when we get home with the leftovers, it's only been an hour or so.

I don't think it's any of a concern. In American reheating any sort of leftover is a daily thing for most of us, and most people never get sick from doing that. I know I've personally never gotten sick from eating leftovers in all my life, that I can remember. If I ever did get sick it was probably few and far between (once a year tops) and I attributed it more to the food not agreeing with me the first time around.

1. I happened to make coq au vin last Saturday night, complete with a village Nuits St.Georges. Took three hours to make.

2. As for the bulk of your post, it reminds me of a great line in The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel:

"A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest"

well I've come to America from my home in Switzerland for 1 month to this day to help my brother get his studio started and for the "culture experience" and I thought I'd share with you what I've learned:

9. I remembered another one! everyone has microwaves, i am fairly well off back in switzerland and its never even crossed my mind to buy one

This above - is the very first post - the thread was always about microwaves being so prevalent in the US!

This is the really interesting "cultural" difference to me - so I cannot imagine anybody taking away leftovers from a Restaurant!!

This honestly seems totally bizarre to me and I would be morbidly embarassed if saw anybody do this or ask - but I never have, in any Restuarant I've eaten in, in the last 30 years or so... whether in Britain or Europe - France,Germany,Spain Italy, Greece etc.

You want more differences?

You guys have AWESOME steaks. Seriously. Our steaks freakin suck compared to the fat, juicy stuff you guys have.

Your churches are very modern, while ours are usually really old, and while not run down, they're not modern either.

Alot of you drive automatic shifting cars, those aren't easily found in Europe. We drive shift sticks. You can get your driver's license in no time for almost nothing, we go through months of training and pay up to 1000 euros for it.

You can buy your smokes at the supermarket, here only in smoke shops and some gas stations.

You have steakhouses. Very few of those in Europe, we have restaurants by themes (italian, asian, etc).

Your fast food burgers are good. Ours suck. Same for fries. Oh and you lucky bast!!!!s have chili fries, none of those here :(

Oh, and Taco Bells, wish we had those here too.

you have a very crappy public transportation system. Here its alot more developped, with trams and buses that arent run down like yours.

Our raves are illegal, in the forests, and theres alot more drugs than in yours.

I'll think of more stuff eventually ;)

I never said it wasn't relavant to the topic. It's just boring.

Reading about how everything is going to kill you gets old after a little while.

My response to all these threads that deal with stuff that will kill you or is harmful.

YOU ARE GOING TO DIE. GET OVER IT.
