I know that weighed a ton but 15" Black Widows sound SO good with something with SVT written on it. I made a record with mates in OZ in the 80's called Absent Friends when INXS took time off the road- even had a number one single! When we played around Sydney I played my 58 P bass, my 80's custom Maton fretless thru a 70's SVT and a 2x15" BW Peavey cab- no pedals except a an Octave and a filter of some sort- I remember that being one of my fav tours sound wise- lugging our own gear and having fun..

When I go to a buddy's house for our infrequent basement jams, I still plug into my 1980's Peavey Combo300 with a Black Widow 15 in it. (Which, after cleaning the voice coil of the disintegrated foam, sounds even better.)

This may be the Yes show I would most like to have seen- Going for the One is a GREAT record- what a set list here..

Saw that tour at the Forum. It was awesome. As were all the Yes shows I saw, even the Tormato shows, until the Drama tour which was at the Long Beach Arena. I hate to say it, but even Squire looked like he would have rather been somewhere else that night. I saw them several times in later years, some were great, some were ok. I really enjoyed the Keys to Ascension show I saw in San Luis with Howe and Wakeman back.

This may be the Yes show I would most like to have seen- Going for the One is a GREAT record- what a set list here..

I missed that by one year. I saw Yes four times throughout the Relayer years, and then I was doing my first band after that and didn't get to many shows, then. The last time I saw Yes (August 7, 2013) they performed three complete albums, in song sequence and with what seemed like all the guitars and basses used for the original recordings! They did Close To The Edge, Going For The One, and The Yes Album, plus the obligatory "Roundabout" at the end. Amazing concert. This was in a small outdoor amphitheater (Evans Amphitheater in Cain Park). We sat in the 4th row right in front of Chris. I had my Leica Trinovid 8x50BA binoculars so I could really watch his fingerings and learn a thing or two.

The previous evening we went to this:

Yes to appear in Rock Hall Legends Series Aug. 6, play Cain Park next day

There were some extremely candid conversations at it , along with performances by Geoff , Steve, and Jon (Davison) with Steve playing.

I'm sure you guys have seen these by now- the strings at 16.24 are goosebump material.

Incredible sound….Everyone heard those strings, not the Least Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne.

Would Love to hear the content of those conversations…I think.
It seems like Chris tried to use the original instruments Live most of the time, but I think he had substituted the Gibson LP recording bass used on TOTC with the custom extended range Tobias at this point.
And of course the Ranney 8 for the Rickenbacker 8 string.

This is the one I missed.
I did see the next tour “in the round”, and they played most of GFTO album.
It appears with this show and the material being brand new and fresh,They were absolutely on fire.
These are great versions. Thanks for posting it…i ended up watching most all of it.

His moves, that black and white “triangle” suit and of course, the triple-neck (for “Awaken”), were big highlights. The band was on fire; they were always up for MSG gigs. They were very special concerts.

I'm a fan Garry.
I'm currently playing in a covers band in Melbourne and we do some of the INXS stuff...really nice bass lines to play!
I also loved Absent Friends back in the day.
Did you ever use a pick on the INXS tracks?

I used a pick a lot- mainly more rock tracks playing 8ths or 16's - Don't Change etc- I learned the downstroke rock style pretty early- many OZ pub rock bands did that, Ramones kinda punk thing - on tracks where I needed more attack- Kiss the Dirt on my old Jazz fretless, Never tear us apart- - Need You Tonight the instrument that I'm sure most people assume is a guitar is me with a pick- ironically for the Chris Squire inspired thread- on my 73 Ricky thru a 100 watt Marshall direct. (Not a Steiny as in the video). I used whatever I thought suited the track- fingers, pick, keys, thumb ( Burn for You and Listen Like Thieves)..Mainly my P bass but other basses - my Maton Fretless, Music Man fretless on the One Thing and some custom Ibanez basses during my Ibanez sponsorship days.. Whatever's clever as we used to say.. I prob should have stuck with one main sound ala Squire but our music kinda demanded flexibility- Live it was all P bass and for a while a midi bass for the keyboard songs. At Wembley I used the Midi B on What You Need and all the extra sounds you hear in the middle 8 breakdown is me using samples I took off a cassette of a remix of the song. I never told the other guys about it and I'm sure they were wondering where it was coming from.

This is a great thread. Thanks for sharing your loves and influences, Garry. I'm a big Yes and INXS fan, so this is fun.

It's funny- with all these memories and flashbacks etc starting from the Chris Squire thoughts I have forgotten to mention an important fact ! we as the Farriss Brothers were all over the solo records of Bruford and moreso - Alan White.
Alan's - Ramshackled- in particular was a fav of ours - we used to play in between set at F.B gigs in Perth- we loved it because it was so NOT like Yes and moreso along the funk /fusion that we were leaning towards. I mean who would have thought Alan would release an album with a Barry White type first track?! Some REALLY good songs on here- and some not so- funny having a solo record where you just play drums.. But it mainly worked..

Another weird tangent with a 6 degrees vibe is a band we in the Farriss Brothers used to listen to while high- Gentle Giant- very trippy and brilliant players- all multi instrumentalists - made up their own string section ! They used Roger Dean on their album Octopus- prob one of my fav pieces by him. Some of their stuff was too extreme but they were certainly one of a. kind. Bass player is amazing....
