"Funk classics" from the 90's to now?

My Friends,

I guess I'll blur the lines a little more on this whole "funk" thing - my definition of funk has more to do with how a particular song makes me feel and move than any strict definition presented thus far. I guess I'm a touch naive and my education is obviously lacking.

For instance, these guys are total lunatics, but they are playing some of the funkiest tunes I have heard in a while:

Here Come the Mummies - Bump

I would kill to play bass in this kind of a group. To me, THIS is what I think of these days when somebody says "funk".

Bluewine, being an old school Funk purist bass player, could you attach some clips or videos of you playing what you consider to be classic Funk bass lines so we can get an idea of what real Funk is?

I don't know what real funk is. There are many different types of funk. Real funk is whatever you think real funk is. I can't define that

My comment didn't pertain to whatever "real funk" is. It was more about what I consider funk which would be a lot of stuff that goes back into the 60's and 70s. There is a big difference between whatever "real funk" is and what's funky to me.

Personally, I think a lot of the stuff Rocco Prestia plays is very funky.

So,to answer your question, no I can't post any clips of me playing those sort of bass lines and to be honest I don't know if I have the chops to play them the way I would want to.

What no BRICKHOUSE?
The Commodores did have funkier stuff, they were just not a big of a hit. And their follow up hits went more of the pop R&B route. The funny thing is on a allied message board in a thread about older songs that would be played on "country radio" today somebody mentioned Brick House after the discussion turned to Lionel Ritchie and his Tuskegee Project.

Sexy MF by Prince is one that always kills.. Can also add Willing and Able and In the Dark.. Two of my favorites.. Oh and Cream as well..

Blue, sorry man but being older just means you're older.. It doesn't mean you have an opinion people would deem as that of an authority..

I agree, and I'm not sure where the idea that I'm an authority on anything came from.

It might be from these posts in this thread...
I'm a veteran funk bass player from the 70s (that went the route of Pop Rock). Help me, why don't I recognize any of these songs as classic funk, many I would not even consider funk. From a purist perspective there wasn't much funk period after 1978.
What I was trying to say was, there are no funk classics from the 90s. George Clinton is not funk he's always been a hack. Even back in the 70s.
Cool, I'm older, I'm the Funk Authority. If you we're not around in the early 70s, you just won't get it.

Yes he is funky! That's why his instructional video is called "Fingerstyle Funk".
