@bass12 You are in the classic research position: you are hoping someone else has done the basic legwork for question you want to answer and that would allow you to come along and analyze it. It looks like you need to do the legwork and the analysis.

This can be a long process. I went to what was then the Republic of Sudan in 1990 to do a study of the history of parts of the country's commercial agriculture. I ended up leaving the country early because of government harassment (it was allied with Sadam Hussein in the Gulf War which was brewing at that time.) I came home and ended up coming back to the States that fall and then heading out to the University of Durham, in the north of England, the next summer, to work through their Sudan archives to finish my research.

That was my Ph.D. dissertation.

Sounds like you must have had some very interesting experiences during the researching of your PhD! For my MA thesis what you suggested is what ended up happening, for the most part (my having to do the basic legwork). It was a fun process, though I expect the professors who reviewed my work found it extremely tedious to wade through (lots of transcriptions and comparisons of musical patterns). This was sixteen years ago. Time flies.

A couple of bassist lines caught me. Marcus Miller commenting on Bernie Worrell putting the fear of lost gigs into bass guitar players and Christian McBride asking fellow bass camp attendees does anyone play with their fingers. I need to rewatch they were talking about a specific bass line before Christian's joke.

James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone/Larry Graham. P-Funk to Prince. Although Wendy was there, I think just before Purple Rain. For talk of Motown aiming at crossing over where Funk artist were not, I'm not sure Prince belongs on that Mount Rushmore of Funk. In his era maybe Rick James, but another of the 70's bands. Maybe QuestLove can curate a battle of the bands to settle the score.
