Is there any literature out there that someone would recommend for writing a successful funky bass line that lists common idiosyncrasies that define the style?

Lots of funky bassists don't slap, so no worries there.

More specifically, from the top of my head, John Liebman's "Funk/Fusion Bass" (that one is about fingerstyle) and Allan Slutsky's "The Funkmasters". The latter provides especially good insight into the overall stylistic requirements and characteristics.

I've been playing in a funk and disco band for years. I rarely slap at all.....

I know you asked for literature and the Liebman book is definitely not bad at all.
But try to learn as much songs in the style you like and you'll get there.
