Funk University Disappointment

Well exactly what do you guys want who feel that you're not getting what you paid for?

One can look at youtube clips forever and it will not teach you how to actually play and interplay with human musicians.

What I had hoped for Jauqo, would have been a little more analytical breakdown of some of the PFunk/James Brown lines. what made them work and unique. I guess more of a university type look things. I was hoping this would be a hour or two a day in a school-type setting. mucho love to Bootsy still.

I am going to hang in there and see what evolves. I think that it's early in the game. With all the heavyweight bassists he has on board, I think stuff will get heavy here soon. Some P Funk/James Brown schooling would be a big plus though.

I've been doing the first month of Bootsy's Funk University and so far it has been about 80% fluff and 20% random tab lines. Maybe I'm missing something but the video lectures (the 80% fluff) don't elucidate any aspect of playing or funk, and, frankly, I hate tabs. Maybe I'm missing the point. That's why I'm posting. Can anyone share their experience with this so far?

I feel vindicated! I thought I smelled hype. Now if I could only get off their mailing list...

There are some things that really will be worth it if the student's just hang in there.

Just have a little patience.

....Or it might actually be a waste of time, in which the student's patience might be better tested (or rested) elsewhere. Especially when you are paying to deal with their growing pains and experiments.

By the sound of it, it doesn't sound great. A friend had the same issues with it and quit.

neither will watching bootsy talk about it. experience is the best teacher in that instance. but if i'm paying for education, i want something a little more substantive than someone using tabs to communicate their ideas. no offense to bootsy, who is a great player and singer and an influence on most of us. but i think you can get just as much out of listening to his records as what people tell me he's doing at FU.

Amen.

It's not clear to me why Jauqo first spoke against just watching videos (which is what FU is) to then saying to stick with it. Seems like he already made the argument that it is probably a waste of time.

I defintely don't think Bootsy's school is a waste of time.

My reason for the comment about video's has nothing to do with Bootsy. I hold no artist to a god like status.

My comment is based purely off of ones needs to spend as much time as possible in an actual band context or at least some physical one on one with another living being.

That's the greatest key to becoming a better musician. One can read all the articles in existence, look at all the video's and none of that will get you what you get from playing your instrument with real life on the spot in the moment musician to musician.

OK - but FU doesn't get you into an actual band context or physical contact one on one with another living being.

So I'm not getting your point (or the connection you're making between "live band time being good" (with which I strongly agree) and "FU is worthwhile").

And that right there is what we call, "Truth"

I know this

Again, I'm not saying FU is a waste of time.

Some of the guys who signed up for FU have a gripe(and maybe rightfully so). But on line music schools will not hand you all the keys.

I signed up out of curiosity but they never mentioned anything technical about bass playing. they just kept asking for money to enroll. they hyped it up by saying we have all these pro bassists on our staff. So I never gave them any money. I think FU is great inspiration for beginners though

Hit the nail on the head. Perhaps this is why there's a thread devoted to you? lol. :hiding:

For the folks with gripes about FU.

Was there stuff you learned that you would not have otherwise?

Is it the equivalent of watching Youtube clips, or is there some kind of interaction/feedback on your playing?

Chowowbus wants to learn theory ... I'm guessing that FU is not oriented towards that ... I could be wrong ... any comments would be helpful.

Jaquo - is there any specific reason you can mention to 'hang in there?'

Regarding value ... How much is this program? I'm guessing it isn't 20 bucks a month which might be worth getting some stuff from the master himself.

Obviously FU is very specific in it's intention, but what about it makes it worth signing up over studying privately with a teacher that knows the genre?

I would go for this if I could find the value ... I'm trained and will always have a teacher that I visit regularly, I'd love to do an intensive with FU if I could find a good reason to do so, but so far I'm not sold on it. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that being new they are going to have some growing pains and all, but certainly not willing to part with $$ to find out!

Well it's to early to just condemn the situation. And I feel that those who seem to have a gripe. Are expecting to much to soon.

Basically the only people who will get what they want out of FU are those who have learned that nothing will come over night.
