Funk University Disappointment

I dug futureman's groove during Bela's X-Mas concert here. Whats the gripe? Guys a little too "out-of the -box" for y'all? So what, are you expecting him to be your rabbi? I mean he aint the Da'lai Lama man.

Bummed to hear about Funk U. But I understand that its a small %.

BTW, if Ant Wellington still has Slap lessons on musicdojo, you may wnat to check that out. I had a very good experence there, even though I was not live with another soul.

Of course, as bassists, y'all do know that practicing alone is like talking to yourself all the time. No pocket in singular form man. Ya gotta converse.

only one person griped about his playing, I certainly didn't.

I'm going to disagree. I spent years playing along to records, all by my lonesome. I had to keep up with the best of them during that time and it was great training. Of course, learning to play with others is essential for various reasons, but I can sow a pretty good pocket by myself (if I may be so bold :smug:), in "singular form".

I thought this thread was about F.U. delivering a somewhat disappointing product in its first month. Instead we have people arguing about the merits of an unrelated bassist and some telling others how they think people should learn.

Futureman is not a bassist but a drummer/percussionist

and some telling others how they think people should learn.

I suggested that they understand that playing with other musicians is priceless when wanting/needing to learn how to play.

Jaugo, I completely agree with you about the importance of playing with others when learning. However, some don't have that opportunity or choose to take a different route.

My bad on misidentifying the instrument of whoever Futureman is but the original thought is the same, he has nothing to do with the thread.

I was hoping Bootsy would give some insight on his incredible playing but I guess that will never happen. When asked about those monumental Mothership Connection sessions he said he was so loaded in 1975 he didn't remember. There was an interview in Guitar Player back in 1976 (there was no Bass Player magazine yet) and all he talked about was his equipment. Maybe if FU gets more technical in the future I'll pay for it

If (some of) you guys are really expecting someone to teach you "how" to be funky i'm afraid you will never be funky. Just like evrything else the "funk" comes from your own creativity. yes, there are a few starting points you have to know like: "being on the one" or how to keep a line kind of simple. But beyond that you have to draw from within and that just can't be tought.

Wait..."You can't learn anything from watching videos, but I'm somehow involved with this one so this one will be different!"?

I have to say- I never really understand your angle, Jauqo, outside of wanting to spread "hints" about inside information in threads. I don't see where you are coming from.

I never said that you cant learn from watching video's. I said that being a musician and playing with other musician is one of the better learning tools.

And no Angus I am not involved with FU. But I am a professional musician that is indeed about the business of music.

Kat's feel that they are not getting their money worth and I am in a position to help them, then I will do so.

Simple as that

And it's not about spreading hints. Plus my hints are always on point.

It sounds like you have a vested interest in the product, which is something people are paying for. You are making it sound like you have some special knowledge that should persuade them to continue paying. I'm just saying, if you have some special ties or interest here, you should be divulging it openly so people know where you are coming from. It sure sounds like you have a particular reason for encouraging people to stay with this particular website.

People are paying for this stuff- I don't think it's fair to talk people into spending more money just by making vague allusions to upcoming events if at the same time you don't make the nature of your involvement clear.

I wish I got in on this post earlier. I read everything here. Tabs, theory, lectures, general displeasure for this online teaching. FU is NOT going to teach you how to FUNK, be FUNKY, feel the FUNK, or un-tighten all the tight white behinds who want to FUNK. Either you have the FUNK in your bones or you do not have the FUNK in your bones. If you don’t have the FUNK in you then there is nothing to come out other than mimicking someone else’s lines. If you do have it in you then you don’t need FU’s help.
When your backbone slips and you move your hips when James Brown gets down, you get the FUNK. Because….

Ow, we want the funk
Give up the funk
Ow, we need the funk
We gotta have that funk
