Funk University Disappointment

It sounds like you have a vested interest in the product, which is something people are paying for. You are making it sound like you have some special knowledge that should persuade them to continue paying. I'm just saying, if you have some special ties or interest here, you should be divulging it openly so people know where you are coming from. It sure sounds like you have a particular reason for encouraging people to stay with this particular website.

People are paying for this stuff- I don't think it's fair to talk people into spending more money just by making vague allusions to upcoming events if at the same time you don't make the nature of your involvement clear.

No I do not. I just hope it works out for all involved(and that means students also).

Ummm, So this means that you have a vested interest in Funk U? No problem if you do, just want to know.

No I do not. I just hope it works out for all involved(and that means students also).

Nobody here told anyone to "s**k my d**k" like Berlin did.

That's deep.

He said it, not me. I'm just disagreeing with his insinuation that the conversation between the two of us is worse/less civil than Jeff Berlin's childish tantrums (which it is no way is).

I know. I just think that to say that is really something else.

I know we all sometimes disagree on tb but to take it there is deep.

Absolute waste of time and money. Soup-Can DAn....oh boy. I'm not a hater but he shouldn't really be doing videos.

And some of the Jamerson iso tracks???! Pull straight from youtube???!

Love me some Bootsy but this is for little kids. Not grown up stuff at all.

The "one" is not a magic potion or space formula....it's a beat. It doesn't take a month to explain. If you have to take a month explaining the "one" to anyone then they have picked the wrong thing and should probably try something else.

just my humble two cents. Love Bootsy, I was curious but damnit, wish I had my 30 bucks back . :-)

Yeah! What the hell is up with that guy???

Thanks for not being a hater sonofabass.

Your absolutely right, being on camera is new to me and something I am striving to become proficient in. In the future, even if I get better, you'll still not like my videos because, my primary focus is to teach the lesson without hype or ego; I'm just being down to earth and real, to try to be anything other than myself would be even more lame. We have plenty of world-renowned, exceptional bass players as professors that you have actually heard of. I'm here to make sure that what Bootsy wants to teach gets taught, and it has been an awesome experience I will be forever grateful for.

Based on your evaluation of our academic endeavor, I have a feeling you will not be around to see me blossum as an on-camera personality, but I will always hold out hope.

On that note, in response to the rest of your post, I have made it clear that I am available to listen to student's (which I believe you are,) questions, issues, complaints, etc. so you know how to get in touch with me, if you are really interested in suggesting improvements or enhancements. Posting a grievence here, without first giving us the opportunity to do something about it, well, I'm not a mindreader, but I am committed to improving your experience. So talk to me.

respectfully

If it's without hype or ego, why the "professor" and "university" title? Because, as far as I've seen, none of them are accredited "professors" nor is it a "university" in any sense of the word. It sounds like those words are being used to lend credibility in the form of formality- that seems to me to be a form of hype, and not a particularly honest one. In fact, it makes me wary of it, because it feels like they are using that nomenclature specifically to feign teaching credentials where there aren't any. It all feels a bit "as seen on TV" infomercial.

If there was really no hype or marketing involved, then it simply would've been "lessons with bootsy, etc [other players' names here]".

Bootsy calling his school a funk university and calling the teachers professors are not misleading at all. People who know Bootsy and the history of funk music and it's origins knows exactly where he's coming from with the titles he's attached.

If it's hype so what. Hype is part of the funk, always has been, always will be. The hype is part of what makes the music so gritty.

What so called real university teaches funk music?

I would consider Boosty and the others more professor like than some of the teachers I had in school. At least the Funk U crew are very knowledgeable about their subject. I can't say that for some of the teachers I had for classes and ones that I worked for when I had an IT gig at a college for a while.

I also see the professor title as being a little tongue in cheek, which is ok. That's part of funk.

I will say this for Dan, he is open to ideas and seems to be genuinely interested in making Funk U something that the students have input in. I was the one that originally brought up the lack of standard notation in the learning material and others also mentioned it. Dan began offering it this week and he's done a good job on the transcriptions.

If someone comes up to you and says "your music makes my pains go away!", it doesn't make you a doctor.

Except that he's not a professor, and it's not an accredited university. So it is misleading. When you make an education website whose purpose is to make money, calling people professors and calling it a university is fully intended to make it sound like it has credentials and a professional background that it doesn't have. It's misleading. It makes people feel more comfortable with the people that are teaching, as it sounds proper and professional. That is misleading.

If the people are well known and have credibility in the field, which these people do, then they don't need to bestow titles upon themselves that they haven't earned. Teacher is not the same thing as professor.

If it's hype so what. Hype is part of the funk, always has been, always will be. The hype is part of what makes the music so gritty.

But the hype isn't about the music, it's about the teaching and the lesson plans. That's not part of the music. Again, people have to shell out cash, so being "all hype" isn't a good thing, and it's a complete and total cop out to say that it is just part of the music.

I'm sure some do, and I'm sure the people teaching it aren't as big a part of it's history as Bootsy. But that doesn't mean it's okay to call the website a university and call himself a professor. There probably aren't many schools who ACTUALLY teach basketweaving, but that doesn't mean that old Mrs. Robinson down the street can open up a website and call herself Professor Robinson from Basketweaving University (even if she is really, really good). It implies a lot of things that aren't actually there.

It sounds cool to say it's tongue and cheek, but the whole website is structured around that language, including all of the administrative staff. It's clearly intentional, and not meant to be a joke. It just makes it feel more like a gimmick or sham.

Regarding the professor/university thing, having played that gig quite a lot...

Even for an associate or assistant professor to call himself "professor" is a big affront in academic circles. But of course, this is the internet, eh. I don't think "Dr. Bass" ever progressed past BS, doncha know. ;)

And the internet is full of bogus on-line colleges. With GI Bill and subsidized loans, it's a shame so much of our tax dollars line the pockets of these frauds while the students get a phony degree without learning anything.

But I don't really see that applying to F.U. The Bootsy character is a pimp/playa/funkemedian. No one could possibly be misled.

Like I said those who get it get it.

I would give Boosty, Skeet Curtis, Billy Bass or Cordell "Boogie" Mosson more credit as a teacher of funk that some wanna be professor with some papers who claims to be an authority on the genre just because they got a fancy title before their name.

It's not about "getting it". I'm not missing anything. It's about being real.

They aren't being real.

If your name stands alone, you don't need those "fancy titles". Yet they took them on anyway, so it makes your point moot. They apparently felt they were necessary. Doesn't that make them the "wanna-be professor"?
