Who would you say is the funkiest White bass player you have met? I am hoping the subject doesn't touch anyone's tender spots considering how I worded it (which btw was totally "innocent" as it were!) Someone who you would guess was a Black bassist w/o seeing them, but who turned out to be White, Latin, Indian, East Indian, Middle Eastern, etc.

Can you tell me what Black sounds like? Then maybe I could hear the world from your point of view, I mean Funk is funk and there is no blacker or whiter or whatever way of being funky. You didn't touch my tender spot but this is really pushing the envelope of appropriate. You are basically saying Black bassist are funkier than non black bassist with some exceptions.

I agree, man. Who gives a darn what color someone is? How does that have anything to do with how they play music?

I agree TOTALLY! My favorite FUNKY bass player (regardless of anything) that I have met and seen play many times is WILLIE WEEKS. Super guy, great hang, awesome player...

I didn't see a 'racist' slant to this thread. The reality is that a lot of REALLY funky players are black. The source of the funk is from that culture. I have LOVED the funk of Willie, 'Ready' Freddy Washington, James Jamerson, Bootsy, Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Randy Jackson, Chuck Rainey and sooo many others for decades.

Of course, the source of funk is Black culture. The greater issue is that funk has been around for over forty years. From the beginning there were white players playing funk, but today a funky white player is pretty unremarkable because learning funk is pretty much a fundamental part of learning bass guitar.

I think you'll be fine.

Now if I had posted this very thread it would have been a totally different situation.

I have to chime in with this. Willie Weeks was just an awesome player, totally smooth one of my favorites for sure. As for as color and funk goes, funk is colorblind, its all about the feel.
