Funkiest non-Black bassists :)

My Vote goes to Neil Jason from the Brecker Brothers doing Some Skunk Funk live at the North Sea Festival (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IAm0FyDnnM). Go to 5:30 in the clip. Wooten before Wooten could walk.

Watch and funk. :bassist:

You're welcome.

Wow. Not only is his playing funky, but you can't get much funkier than a fro/beard paired with sunglasses and matching denim hat and overalls. Classic (and a little creepy).

ROCCO (cool guy too, got to chat with him between shows for around 20 minutes)

Liked his sound on P-Bass better though.

Jesus. Getting old is brutal.

Who would you say is the funkiest White bass player you have met? I am hoping the subject doesn't touch anyone's tender spots considering how I worded it (which btw was totally "innocent" as it were!) Someone who you would guess was a Black bassist w/o seeing them, but who turned out to be White, Latin, Indian, East Indian, Middle Eastern, etc.

You managed to offend me. What does funkiness have to do with ethnicity? You may as well say, "He doesn't sound black, does he?" or "She's a good dancer, for a white chick." :rollno:

Yah sure, tell me about it :D

The only one I've met is Rocco.

I completely agree. That new bass just isn't doing it. Not only that, but it's BIG TIME ugly.

Rocco (like a LOT of us) seems to be on a 'tone-quest', like many of us, (me included :hmm:). His sound on P-Bass is (and has been) TOTALLY MONSTROUS... but, like ME, and many other bass brothers, he's by-the-cab and doesn't have a clue of how GREAT :bassist::bassist::bassist: he sounds 'off stage'... so, he quests for the perfect on-stage sound... FAIL! (IMO) Met him... heard him at least 6 times... small club, large club, outside... (prize for the LONGEST 'Run-On' sentence on TB? :D)

I've honestly never heard a funky musician and made the assumption that he was black based only on that fact. There would be no reason to.

Do you mean Dane Alderson? great player!

For myself, it's Pino and Paul Turner - saying that, they're both friends of mine so it always seems a bit odd to be saying how great their playing is!

Since the Scotland blokes are participating, how about Ross Hamilton when he was the bassist for Wolfstone? If we're putting Dane in there, then Ross could make Highland Rock qualify as Celtic Funk -

I must say, though, that this type of thread is proof that good musicianship has no color - except for the aesthetic colorings we bring to it through our tone, technique and passion.
