It seems that mostly everyone understands the op's question, because I read a similar post, where metal/punk rockers were named. I grew up playing funk, and it’s hard to describe what it is to someone who is not familiar with it.

drasticDUB asked, “WHAT”, so I assume he/she is unfamiliar. Can anyone put it into words for those that may not know what “Funk” is?

My vote goes to Tower Of Power’s, Rocco Prestia.

I don't see the problem with this thread or why so many people want it closed. The OP made no suggestions indicating any sort of racial preference or bias so what's the deal? I think the only people that are opposed to this thread are either quick to misinterpret things regarding race or are uncomfortable talking about race in the first place. The later need to deal with it and the former need to read the OPs post until it's burned into their brains.

Although I think Bryant Gumble is the least funky Black Guy I've ever seen, he doesn't play bass....:D
The funkiest Hispanic guy IMHO is Marco Mendoza-the guy's a one-man James Brown Revue!
Funkiest White Guy might be Tim Drummond-a former James Brown sideman, although my good friend Michael Doster logged 10 years with B B King which makes him one funky skinny little white dude to hang there for that length of time....
Tons of funky brothers of all colors in Nashville: Keith Horne, John Billings, Randy Smith and Steve Forrest all come to mind in the caucasian persuasion while Chris Kent, Kyle Whalum, Vic (of course!), Regi Wooten while playing bass, Jesse Boyce, Earl Peaks and too many others to mention put the Soul in Music City.
Funk is a feel, it's totally color blind-just ask Phil Chen, the funkiest Chinese Jamaican who sounds like James Jamerson on the planet....

Actually, your response makes you sensitive, IMO.

Rhonda Smith is originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and she is from a very old Afro Canadian family. The Halifax area was a place where the British settled many African Americans who had aided them during the American Revolution. Traditionally in America (and I guess Canada too) mixed race people have simply been called "Black." In the last twenty years, there has been a movement in America to acknowledge people as Biracial or mixed race. I think it is a natural by product of the fact that nowadays interracial marriage is much more common, and many white women are now giving birth to dark babies. That is very different from most of the history of this country when mixed people were almost exclusively the product of liasons between white men and black women undercover of night.

I know this is way off topic, but it never hurts to have a little info to help define things.
