Man, I'm seeing a lot of players mentioned who to me are anything but funky. Alain Caron, the dude from the brecker bro's....these guys sort of scream "unfunky" to me. Everything of theirs that I've heard sounds way too forced.

Chris Wood, Rocco, Paul Turner, Pino, Jaco, and guys like them all make your head nod heavy on the one, whenever they want. That is funky to me.

IMHO, I really never thought of Jaco of "funky," and these guys by association. Charlie Meeks (from Chuck Mangione) was funky; Chuck Rainey lays down a "groove." But, those are my definitions.

Back when I was in high school, the tempo of a "funk" tune was a little slower than a "jazz-rock" tune. In the spirit of my former supervisor, she would say, "Define 'Funk' for me first; then we can debate effectively."

Speaking of high school, back then someone said their locker smelled "funky" when they left their sweaty gym socks in it for week. As a musician, I took offense to that.

Check out Tim Drummound's bassline for "I Can't Stand Myself" and "Licking Stick" from the most excellent book The Funkmasters.

He was the only white guy in the group and he paid some serious dues from the R&B purists.......

James Brown was the King of Funk....and he picked Tim to play in his band.

Personally I wouldn't put Duck Dunn or Carol Kaye in this catagory....they are just too groovey BABY!

I agree! I was in a Phish Tribute Band for awhile. That is no easy task.

Yes they have some jazzy/rock stuff, but Mike Gordon can slap with the best of them.

He also has a solo album that is funky.

Maybe Phish isn't funky 100% of the time, but Mike is.

I'm reading some interesting things in this thread. Mark King isn't funky? You must not have checked out much of his playing. A song has to be slow/medium tempo for it to be funky? You must not have checked out Bernard Edwards on "Everybody Dance". Victor Wooten isn't funky? You must be deaf. I know it's cool in some circles to disrespect Victor (I myself am not too big on endless displays of bass virtuosity) but come on! Ridiculous.

Someone mentioned Stuart Zender's work on "Space Cowboy". It's widely known that Zender did not play on the album version of that track (only the single version).

Anyway, there are plenty of funky non-black bassists out there. PLENTY. I'm not even going to bother putting in a vote...

BTW.....I met this unknown Albino midget Albanian in Manila in 83.....played with a Earth Wind and Fire Tribute band......at the Hobbit house......he was outa sight.

He'd give Marcus Miller a run for his money....

While "slap" CAN be funky, it usually isn't . . . IMO . . . . . .

Anyway, this thread was about a taboo subject(among others.......), and I think the question has been beaten good enough.

Take it from a guy who has more than a half century experience of being black: you would have way more important things worry about than this thread.
