On the Mandrill tip. I just went to www.allmusic.com and happened to read a review of one of my favorite albums, "Composite Truth". The reviewer really liked the album but tossed out this aside:

"For such a strong band, Mandrill's bass lines were often uncharacteristically weak".

I find nothing weak about "golden Stone" "Ape is high" or "hang loose"
I'd like to see him play golden stone!
OH and Brad we also played "peck ya neck" back then.

Have you heard those 2 JT discs I mentioned?
(Living Underground & Penthouse Suite)
...just noticed the titles on both those are opposite ends of the extreme.
;)

Hi Jim,
I haven't got those two albums - the ones I have are "Wait A Minute" (on cassette), "Get Organised", and "Whole Lotta Live".

The thing I like about JTQ is that they remind me a bit of Booker T. & the MG's (one of my favourite bands from the 60's - I love stuff like "Slim Jenkin's Place", "Hip-Hug-Her", "Red Beans & Rice" and "Time is Tight").

Jaco covered "Wiggle Waggle"...originally found on Hancock's Fat Albert Rotunda.
www.dustygroove.com routinely stocks this title.
Thrust & Man-Child are very good!
;)

Eddie Henderson-Sunburst(w/ Alphonso Johnson). Henderson played trumpet in Hancock's Mwandishi-era bands.

Miles Davis-We Want Miles
Miles Davis-Star People
...both fall under the 'chromatic Funk' umbrella.

The Brecker Brothers-Straphanging(w/ Marcus Miller)
The Brecker Brothers-Brecker Brothers(from '75?)...has "Some Skunk Funk".
Billy Cobham's A Funky Thide Of Sings also has this tune.

Jeff Lorber Fusion-Water Sign & Galaxian

The Crusaders-Images, Those Southern Knights, & Free As The Wind.

Early Spyro Gyra-Catching The Sun, Free Time, Incognito, City Kids, etc. Bassists include Will Lee, Marcus Miller, & Kim Stone.

On the smoother side-
Grover Washington, Jr-Winelight. Some nice mellow/funky grooves.
Good stuff.I also would like to add:
Ronnie Laws[/]Fever,Pressure Sensitive,Friends&Strangers
Bassist include Nathaniel Philipps, and Donnie Beck

Jeff Lorber[/] Wizard Island.featuring another Portland Ore.Bassist Danny Wilson

Norman Connors [/] You Are My Starship (a real nice album) Bassist-Michael Henderson

If your looking for more modern sounding stuff by a youger crowd of artist I'd highly recommend these two artist:

The Screaming Headless Torso's- Kind of a blend of Chili pepper's style funk and Louis Armstrong style jazz. Very cool band but I believe they are currently going by the name The Headless Torsos since their singer departed.

The Om Trio- These guys are an instrumental band loosly affiliated with the Jam Band scene but referencing them to Phish or The Dead IMO would be an insult. The play with the organ, bass, drum type of line up and are phenominal. Funk/Jazz at its best. They've also been known to cover the songs Bombtrack by R.A.T.M. and Suck my Kiss by the R.H.C.P. in a jazz/funk style. Very coll adaptations in there own right. :bassist:

The SHT did release an instrumental album(Amandala) under the name Headless Torsos...they still use Bowman & his 'Bebop yodeling'.
If you're already into SHT-
Check out Lunar Crush...essentially the SHT with John Medeski on organ. It Rocks harder than the MMW stuff.
Also, the SHT's "Fuse" & bassist Fima Emphron have another project called The Hasidic New Wave...the genre is Klezmer; at times, they come off sounding like Hendrix meets Weather Report(pre-Jaco) meets Miles Davis(Bitches Brew era).

Kinda similar to the SHT-
James "Blood" Ulmer's Music Revelation Ensemble...harmolodic/Ornette-style Prime Time Jazz. Some MRE players include:
Guitar-Ulmer
Bass-Jamaladeen Tacuma; Amin Ali
Drums-Grant Calvin Weston; Ronald Shannon Jackson; Cornelius Rochester
Horns-Sam Rivers; Arthur Blythe; John Zorn; Pharoah Sanders; David Murray

...and Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society!

Jim,

Who was the bassist of Spyro Gyra's Pygmy Funk? Every time I listen to that one I get this vision of a bunch of little guys dancing around a bonfire working themselves into a frenzy. :D

EB-O
That's from their 1st album...I'm assuming it's Jim Kurzdorfer.
I'll check the album's credits when I get home.

Hey-
Did you ever receive that package?
Or did we get screwed by the US Mail?

I finally went by the P.O. Box on Saturday to pick it up and I've been jamming every since. I'll get back to you with a PM on the package a little later today but THANK YOU! ;)
