For John McLaughlin fans, a slight thread derail: I recommend the movie "Round Midnight" starring Dexter Gordon with cameos by McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and others. It's about the 1950's jazz scene with Gordon as a sax player in NY with substance abuse issues who becomes an ex-patriot who moves to Paris to revive his career. It was a good flick and Dexter was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar and the soundtrack won a Grammy. While I'm derailing, another good jazz flick was "Bird", Clint Eastwood's flick about Charlie Parker.

No records were ever released.

Dog Cheese was a short lived mid 80's LA based band. The line-up was: Michael Landau - Guitar, Vinnie Colaiuta - Drums, Steve Tavaglione - Keys/Sax, and Larry Klein - Bass. Not too much is known about the band, but there are one or two live bootlegs floating around plus some studio demo material. This video is a bunch of Landau photos with a Dog Cheese track titled "Dog Cheese" from the rare studio demo material.

Thanks for mentioning, both of these were on my list to see at some point in busier times and always wanted to see. Thanks for the jump start to my brain.

Love this film. My dad (Spanish) was a student in Paris in the late ‘50s before he came to the UK. There is a scene in the film of a guy listening to jazz outside the club in the rain because he can’t afford to get in. My dad used to do this in Paris too. Here’s a photo (of a photo) of him playing his harmonica in a cafe in Paris:

This is getting kind of creepy around here. In a different thread I read earlier today there was a mention of chocolate just as I was thinking of going out to pick some up. Now, I see this as I get back from buying a couple pounds of DARK CHOCOLATE! :eek:

Now, I get that yesterday was Friday the 13th, but today? Must be due to this:

Another Holdsworth side project, the CMP label had a bunch of cool releases in the early 90's.

Crusaders 1 - The Crusaders.

My Family was moving from Illinois to California by car in '72.
This and Quincy Jones "Walking in Space" was constantly played on the cars 8-track.


Thess tunes stressed the use of dissonance in Jazz and got me used to it.
Especially Wilton Felder's sax solo.
Joe Sample's Fender Rhodes at 6:19-6:44 made me think of some crazy off key ice cream truck music.
I was 12.




This one was my favorite.
I loved the scratch wah guitars.
To me they sounded like bubbling oatmeal in a pot.



This one held a special place in my heart.
Saying goodbye to Illinois and hello to California.
Larry Carlton's guitar solo sums up the feeling well.


Edit:I would not really call this Fusion.
More like electric Jazz.
