Hi,

do you know how long should take the transfer for a firmware update?
It's been been blinking with the message "Loading Update" for about
30 minutes. I don't know if I should abort and retry, or simply wait longer.

Takes less than a minute. I have problems if I try to use my Focusrite 2i4 for updates (it works for other stuff). My Roland UM-One is what I use for updates.

Do you have both cables connected and the correct ports selected via the midi preferences menu? Or are you using the web-based updater?
 
I think so. So the Filter Cutoff MIDI command works in conjunction with modulation frequency cutoff of the VCF, and is controlled by connecting a MIDI expression pedal to sweep the filter?

Basically the pedal sweeps either 1, 2 or 4 octaves either side of the cutoff set by the slider in the editor (depending on the setting chosen in the boot menu). Don’t think I can make it any clearer than that.

I am using the M-audio, both ports are connected, and selected in the menu.
It's a first time for the firmware update, but I've had no problem so far to transfer patches.
I will abort and retry.

Patch transferring is only a small amount of data compared with the firmware update. As I said, patch transfer works fine on my Focusrite, updates don’t.

Bummer, I can't make the update with the M-audio. Tried many times with several versions of the editor, to no avail.
I will try the browser method, but probably that won't help. Since you are working on the manual of the V3 (thanks so much for this btw!), maybe giving a more narrow list of best recommended midi cables would be useful.

It’s my plan to include that information. Need to get it approved. To be honest I’d just recommend getting a UM-One.

I’m curious as to whether my Source Audio Hub will work as an interface, it shows up in the FI menu so should at least work for patch transfer.

I’m really glad you asked. That is explained in the manual, but I think it could be made clearer. I might include that as an FAQ.

CC11 and 74 both control the filter cutoff using the range set by “VCF” in the global menu. That is selectable between 1, 2 and 4 octaves. What this means is that the pedal can move the cutoff up to 1, 2 or 4 octaves away (in either direction) from the cutoff frequency that is set in the patch. (So accordingly the pedal either has a 2-, 4- or 8-octave sweep.)

The easiest way to explain this is by using the “vintage” filter setting. It has a range of 0-80 and is scaled at 10 units per octave.
Let’s say we set its cutoff at its mid-point of 40 as it makes the example easier.

If you set “VCF” in the global menu to 1 octave then at the point the program loads, the cutoff will still be at 40.

If you move the pedal to the toe-up position, the cutoff will move 1 octave down to 30.

If you move the pedal to the toe-down position, the cutoff will move 1 octave up to 50.

Set “VCF” to 2 in the menu. Now a base cutoff off 40 would be swept between 20 and 60 at toe-up and toe-down respectively. (2 octaves either side.)

Set “VCF” to 4 in the menu. Now a base cutoff of 40 would be swept across the entire range from 0 to 80 at toe-up and toe-down respectively. (4 octaves either side).

If the cutoff is set anywhere else than the centre point then, depending what the global setting is, you might have more adjustment range in one direction compared to the other. E.g. set “VCF” to 4 octaves in the menu and the cutoff to 20. Normally you’d be able to adjust 40 steps on either direction but since there are only 20 steps from 20 to 0, that’s as far as you’ll be able to go in that direction. So the usable range in this case will be 0-60.

I’ve cracked doing a smooth II-V-I using expression to change the chords with minimal internal voice movement. The only thing I haven’t yet managed is to get the 5th to become a 6th and then go back down again as there are no symmetrical transformation curves (I’m tempted to ask for one though). So the V chord uses a 5th instead of the better-sounding 6th. Still, pretty cool and not tied to any key signature at all. Might be better if I leave the 5th out altogether and then I could double the root to have all the voices on synth.

OK, so that one wasn’t quite there as one voice jumped an octave. This whole thing is basically a huge maths problem. By slimming down to three voicings and changing the direction of the bass movement, I’ve managed to find a set of numbers that work. This time all the voice leading is smooth:


And, because I've only used three oscillators and two flexi slots, I could have the synth play the root notes and there’s room for more modulation madness.

I’m going to see if I can work out some combinations that work for minor II-V-I progressions too.
