G. Gould Club!

Played my ggi5 at a jazz Christmas show last night. That bass is so fine to play. The action is very nice and the bass plays so even...no hot spots or dead spots and the tone is very sweet everywhere on the fingerboard. I received many compliments on the tone of the bass.

I bought my bass on impulse when The Bass Place put it on sale...closeout really. I am so glad I bought it.

It's ok I'm not really that offended by it and I didn't mean to offend you for your choices either I just found it humorous and look it made this thread active again. :cool:

It sounds all quite logical to me. There was a period where we shared some space with Stars Guitars. We had no sign out front. It wasn't until Stars vaporized that we took over the space completely. The Moses neck is not the same at all as the Modulus or current G. Gould design. So what we're left with apparently is just a snarky comment on their Facebook page. That's not news in this modern world, is it? BTW, did you know that Duane Wong, co-owner with his wife Joanne of El Cerrito Music Works) passed away in the last year or so? He was a good man.

I used to visit them every December when my wife would attend a math teacher conference in Asilomar. For a year or two, they were Modulus' #1 dealer! The end came suddenly there. One of the guys who worked there, Dave Smelt, died in a home accident years ago. I have never heard from Ric Loncarich, the owner. Has anyone seen him? I'd like to say hello someday.

hah! there it is! i lived up on the peninsula but would find any excuse to drive down to watsonville to check out the 'toys'. was always fascinated with their modulus selection. always remembered super nice tops and the tuners were sometimes angled a bit and i thought it made the headstocks look 'sleeker'. just couldn't figure out how to tune it quickly without a winder! :D

did a few neck and body refinishes there (after certain 'home' attempts at rattle can experiments went south). i remember one specific boo-boo when jaco was the rage and, in an interview, he mentioned using boat epoxy on his fingerboards. so, of course, that gave me the courage to rip out my frets with a pair of pliers (:rollno:) and stop by the local 'west marine' store in south san francisco for a large tin of epoxy. in short, some epoxy ended up on the back of the neck and ruined the finish. nice to have companies like stars guitars to help out goofballs like me who have delusions of grandeur and think they can do home projects like jaco, eddie van halen, etc.

yeah, the moses neck was nowhere near the quality of a 'kld' neck. that definitely was a hard lesson learned.

oh no! i haven't been to music works in years. they both were always nice to me even when i was just there to see if anything new arrived. another good one gone.

Don't know about Ric but you might remember Dennis Murphy who I believe was also a part owner. Dennis is an excellent bassist who played a Modulus on a Acoustic Alchemy album, he is still active in the Monterey/Santa Cruz area.

Merry Christmas to all, and to me! Just acquired my first G Gould bass. My first Modulus was an M92 5 string. I also had a Monocoque and a 4 string that I can't remember a model name for. That was a long time ago. Here's the bass that I just picked up, a nice, used 4 in the Rainbow Trout finish! It's fabulous.

So this is weird...or perhaps just smarmy: That GGi6 is still listed on The Bass Place. I'm 99.9% certain its the same one I commented on just slightly over a month ago -- same BMT tone control, same cocobola top over alder body, same 10.7lb listed weight, they're definitely using the same picture

-- only now it's ~$150 more expensive that it was in late November.

From time to time I may give Dennis some feedback on the pricing. Some of the basses were inconsistently priced recently, and I simply reviewed the options on them. 6-strings aren't as popular as they used to be, but if you want one, you might want a good one! There's no hurry.
