when i contacted the seller last week, they said there was no issues with the neck.

their quote was "the neck appears straight to my eye".

the bridge saddles look ok (not jacked up high). is the neck bowing? can your luthier give a diagnosis on its (the neck's) condition?

or maybe just contact the seller and let 'em know the bass isn't in tip-top shape?

keep us in the loop on this. i can forward the pm the seller sent me if that helps.

You can see the relief in this pic. The saddles are ok, but there is a bunch of relief. I have not checked to see if the truss is working or not. The bass is most certainly not playable by any means because of the action. Well I guess it could be good to play bass slide!!

went over the pics to see if they slapped on a set of 34" scale strings. sometimes know-nothings will do that and bend the neck upwards. but the strings look to be 35".

maybe take the strings off to see if the neck goes straight or if there's still a bow? gotta believe either the seller or a previous owner went to town on the truss rod for one reason or another.

geoff's maple necks had a good amount of graphite to stabilize it. so can't believe the neck just went wonky all of a sudden:

your call, good sir. either let the seller know the neck has issues or keep 'the hulk' and have your luthier works their magic.

It has Elixer strings on it and the coating is coming off. Way not the right strings on it. I have a set of GG strings that should work fine for it. I will pull these off and get at the truss tonight. The board needs oil anyway, so I will give the truss a try as well.

Truss is fine. Neck is now flat. The nut however may be another issue. It is chewed up from using strings that were too short for the bass and they did not sit in the nut properly. The taper on the end of the strings ended in the middle of the 1st fret, so the string was smaller at the nut and every time the string moved, it looks like it dug into the nut. So, I am going to put the new strings on, but it still may need a nut as well.

Update.... New strings helped a lot. Nut isn't totally ruined, but probably going to need to be replaced. Truss rod adjusted nicely as well. Super flat neck!! I spent a good while getting the string height mostly ok. Still needs to come down, but I think a little settling down for now. I also fixed the string spacing. It was all jacked up. G string was way over and the B/E spacing was way to close. It is looking better, but again, I have been looking more. I will post a pic of some questionable thing about the bridge tomorrow. But Matilda seems to be doing pretty good for now

the abm bridge can be a bit tricky to set up. i'll put the time in on my basses that still have an abm fully adjustable bridge but mostly i've just gone ahead and replaced the abm's on the rest of my basses with hipshot 'b' style brass bridges (.708 / 18mm spacing). makes life easier.

congrats again on the buy. it's getting rare to see g. gould's on the used market. seems most are holding onto them. it's especially rare to see geoff's earlier work with the maple neck. i'm still kicking myself when i missed out on an auction for an early gould with a purple heart top on a walnut back. looked amazing but was probably heavy as heck.

Agreed- I'm also not a fan of the ABM bridge, but on a Gould (or Modulus, as mine was), as long as you're not switching string gauges and/or taper cores vs standard, you should only have to set it once.

GG Friends... Question.. The GGi5 that I have has blazing hot pickups. 20.33Ohms. The bass seems to be overdriving my amp. I don't really know how else to put that. I use a DNA 1350/DNS 410. EQ is flat. Pulled the input gain back a bit and even the volume down. Still is coming through almost a bit distorted. Any ideas?

Try lowering the pickups. Are you using the active or passive input on your amp? May also have a problem with the preamp or volume pot. The volume pot on mine was doing funky stuff not turning off the sound completely at 0 then doing some distorted output when on full. I remedied the situation by installing a new glockenklang preamp.

There are some dip switches on the emg pre to adjust the sound curve so you could try adjusting those and see if does anything for you I would just take note of their position before moving them so you can put it back to "stock" if need be.

Have you checked the bottoms of the pickups to see which ones they are? Should be one GG 40csx for the neck and a regular 40csx for the bridge, I say should because mine came with two GG40csx's for some reason? Still not sure how I feel about that as I might prefer to have the humbucker for the bridge?

The most important aspect of a forum like this is that we can share ideas and information. Yes, we love to discuss our equipment but there is great value in having so many that can help us when we have an issue with equipment. Hope lowering the pick ups takes care of the problem. I assume you have changed the battery?

Yep. Put new batteries in when the bass arrived. It is awesome that we have this forum and a huge wealth of opinions. It is why I have been on here for 16 years!! Sometimes something as simple as lowering the p'ups just never occurs. Too busy over thinking everything. Nice simple solution.
