No kidding. That tells you about the character of that shop. I very nearly bought it thinking he had hit an extra zero in his price reduction. Someone will hit that buy it now and regret it although the bass is a really pretty one and probably worth 3K.

I’m curious how that would work with taxes and Reverb’s fee structure though? I doubt they’d let it happen, at least not more than once…

Pretty clearly a mistake. The seller has some good feedback and the bass is now listed with free shipping by the same seller.

personally, i can't see any other g. gould on reverb except geoff's blue alder SST fiver...

This past Friday I did the unthinkable. I changed strings on my 2016 GGi5. After I changed them, I realized I must have bumped or moved one of the saddles as the strings were not all spaced correctly. Then as I looked it over, the neck was just a bit bowed and the pickups were a little high. So off to my luthier for a quick set up and to make sure she is back tip top.. I was just getting to like my strings after 15 months or so.

Oh, in the joy of the ‘waiting for my new bass’ I decided that the new bass requires a new strap. I made my own! I still have to round the ends, but it’s all good from there

I'm posting the same comments here as in my FB page, to keep everyone on the same footing:
This is a post about the new price list. I've held off for years, but am finally making some changes. In the big picture, it's not a big deal; these are already expensive basses, and a serious purchase decision. The changes I'm making should not stop anyone who already felt ready from going forward. But, if you can save a little money by having an "early bird alert," why not?

It's up to you if you'd like to download it now, I'll be changing it in a day or two.

geoff, will the updated price list have options like the cost for the hybrid maple neck and sst layout or will those options be "hidden" like the hidden menu at in-'n-out burgers?

There's always stuff not on the menu, but the hybrids (SSB and GGi5) are in the new list, as is the SST!

I sold my ggi5 to Jimmy Lowman. This bass has traveled between Brian Martin, Jimmy and me. I got it in a trade from Brian, sold it to Jimmy and today I bought it back from Jimmy. I really missed it and I know that Brian and Jimmy will both miss it. It has some magic in it. I have started playing in downtown San Antonio on the Riverwalk and it is a humid place to be. The graphite neck stability will be especially appreciated.

So my bass came in today. It’s a very pretty GGi5 with roasted pine body and cocobolo top.

My initial thoughts about the bass? Super lightweight. I love the wide-flat neck. The graphite feels nice, like a satin finish. Very impressive construction.

I was surprised that an almost $4k bass came in a crappy little gig bag. No tools. No literature/stickers… literally nothing. Just a bass in a sh*t bag. That was unfortunate.

When I plugged it in, I was less than impressed with the sound. The EMG setup sounds very overprocessed and underwhelming. I wonder if Bartolini pickups/preamp wouldn’t sound 100x better. I tweaked and tweaked, but couldn’t dial in the clear tones I heard on a number of YouTube videos.

Overall, it’s a very nice bass… just not my taste. I’m not going to keep it. Corner Music has a 48-hour return policy. I’m going to have to pay shipping and likely lose PayPal fees on the refund. I guess that’s the cost of trying out gear that’s not readily accessible in the local guitar shop.

Oh well. I gave it a shot. But boy, is it a beautiful instrument!

I've never played a Gould but the Modulus basses that I played sounded much better to my ear with the Bart/Bart combo. The EMG/EMG just sounded too bright and thin. Of course, I wouldn't experiment on a new $4k bass (although I certainly would if I got it used).

I have some thoughts on your experience.

Years ago Peavey introduced the Cirrus basses. They were pretty revolutionary for a production line bass so I naturally played the first one I saw in a store. It played great, felt wonderful and sounded just so so. I dismissed the Cirrus as not for me. Years went by and I bought one from an ad here that had spectacular wood in it. I put a set of D'Adarrio EXL-170's on it and it sounded fantastic. What??

The Peavey strings sound lousy to me. Some players like them. I don't. My experience with Gould basses is similar except the first one I bought (my ggi6) came to me from a Reverb ad and I changed the strings and did a set up on it before ever really playing it. It sounds killer.

I bought a ggi5 and was not happy with the tone until I changed the strings. Geoff likes those stainless contact core strings but they do not work for me. They sound exactly as you described....thin and edgy. They lack warmth.

I also own a Modulus Q6 that has Bartolini electronics. It sounds big and fat...really a nice sounding bass. My ggi6 has more clarity but still has the big warm tone that I love. The necks feel quite a bit different. Geoff's necks are thinner front to back and feel more flat than the rounded feel of the Modulus necks. Both designs feel great to me.

One other observation is that Geoff ships his basses with more relief in the necks than I prefer. It is possible to reduce the relief with the truss rod but it takes quite a bit of tension to move those graphite necks. My preference in the set up may be just that....my preference. Others may prefer the way Geoff ships the basses.

So all that said, I have basses by several makers including Gould, Modulus, Roscoe and Ibanez. Each has qualities that suit me. I know some are wondering..."Ibanez". I have several including a 5 and a 6 with Nordstrand pickups, 5 and 6 string SRSC805/6 and a pair of GWB205's. The Gary Willis Ibanez basses just kill if you like that "Jaco" tone.

My suggestion is that any who try one of Geoff's basses and are put off by the tone should try different strings. We all have different tonal preferences and we all have different amplification. I am using Mesa Subway amps and cabs these days.

This maybe a dumb question but what are the hybrid necks? Would that be a graphite reinforced maple neck?

And the bisonic pickups, would those be the guild ones or the novaks?

If you're referring to the newly listed hybrid necks, the necks are maple with strategically placed carbon fiber laminates. The pickups in the Bisonic model are from Guild, not Novak. Novaks of course would be available as an option.

Are you discontinuing the Deep Space basses as an “on menu” offering? I don’t see them on the new list.
