G&L 40th Anniversary Custom Shop L-2000

I'm pretty sure I qualify as a total G&L fanboy (I've been playing their basses almost exclusively for about 20 years), and though I'm sure it plays like a dream and sounds great, I have to say that I find this combination very "visually unappealing".

It's only personal taste, but to me the roasted neck and control plate look totally out of place on this body colour and finish...it looks like the illegitimate offspring of a vintage G&L and a Kiesel.

Note to self: Flame suit up, buddy.

Also, looking between the pickup and neck reminds me of the foto flame Hamburglar phenomenon, only this looks more like an unmasked Ninja Turtle.

Good eye there. IMO, the wrinkled Black finish on the hardware like the early days would have set this off. Probably doesn't matter as these will go fast. It's a custom shop run so order what you like and actually get a custom shop build. Could get lucky and get em priced in the same ballpark.

I've got the same issue with some of the Music Man basses. It's like "whammo - have a chrome banana with your toilet seat lid!" I'm also not fond of certain Telecasters, and Mustangs. I do like Jaguars, though, so I get the retro vibe.

It is fairly obvious that Leo was more of a utilitarian tinkerer than an aesthete.

That's the way they were shaped before Fender issued a cease and desist order. I have an early 80's SB2 with the same head stock and a similar oddly shaped control plate.

That's not G&L's "lawsuit headstock." Rather, the lawsuit was about little decals that said "by Leo Fender" placed on all guitar and bass headstocks in the eighties.

I appreciate the retro/vintage homage to the original L-series basses with the early headstock and chrome control plate.

The contradiction: This anniversary model features the current (since year 2000) L-series body shape rather than the original (1980 to 2000) L-series body shape, which remains in use for the LB-100 bass.

Not a fan of the "roasted neck" look, but thank goodness they reverted back to the much more attractive (IMO) "old" headstock design that doesn't have the dumb looking (IMO) "point" on the G-string side of the headstock.

I like the BassMods headstock' I just bought one of their new Hybrid roasted maple necks. Rob will hook you up.
