I actually find it kind of funny that in that other thread some people were blaming G&L's finishes as the reason for their basses not being more popular.

Oldrookie, you didn't mention the price but I would buy any used USA G&L I could lay my hands on. I'm sure it's better priced than a used Fender and you will certainly not regret it.

I'm working on a refinish of a Peavey Fury and have been toying with a bright copper color. That Spanish Copper L2k has convinced me. May end up doing a sunburst with bright copper center and a bronze outline color.

erigod23, didn't mention the price since I am not a supporting TB member at the moment. Trying to respect forum rules. Does appear to be room to flip it without getting hurt, but I'm afraid that I'll fall for it and want to keep it. I'd have to sell at least two other basses I like to be able to get it without hitting the household budget.

It has all the things I like about my Peavey's (the neck, mostly) with MFD pickups--the thing I love about my G&L.

Thanks for the color compliments. The Spanish Copper is a new color for G&L. I bought the bass at the Arlington Guitar show last October from the Lowend guys. The pictures I posted were their pictures because they were better than the ones I took.

Go to new basses and the G&L is about 13 from the bottom.

Those humbuckers on the G&L are incredible!!!

Went back and spent some time with the SB-2. Difficult to hear much in the way of nuance as there was a teenish guy doing his best to impress his friend and everybody within a three-block radius that he was nature's gift to guitar playing. (Had he stopped wanking on it and let the other guys that were hanging out play he would have heard that he has a long way to go yet. Bunch of old guys hang out in this local store and they can PLAY. Still, beside the point.)

The SB-2 works a it is supposed to, both knobs work as intended and the black crinkle finish on the pickguard and bridge is in good shape.

There are quite a few dings in the finish around the edges of the body. Clearly not treated like I treat my gear. One small dent on the back of the neck (which could be steamed out) and one on the edge of the fretboard at the low F. It does not affect the playability. No dead frets, as far as I could tell with rock boy playing just down the aisle.

So, finally, to my question. This is surely not a show piece. Would it be a mistake to by this bass and refinish it? Not overly concerned with resale value, but don't want to destroy all value by refinishing it either. I'm working on learning to refinish basses and am currently on my second one. Both have been Peavey's because they are relatively inexpensive to purchase. The SB-2 would be quadruple the investment I have in the Peaveys.

I'd probably have to sell my TBC to do this (and maybe my SX fretless,) but would end up with two very nice USA Peaveys, one G&L Tribute L2500 and one USA G&L.

Probably an upgrade in perceived value, but I also like the TBC and they are becoming a bit harder to find as well.

Sorry about the long post...just trying to think my way through this. Would appreciate your thoughts on the refinish issue.

personally I am against re-finishing basses.....let the original wear and tear show like badges of honor

Man, I'd keep it as is. Some people pay big bucks to have basses look like they've been through battle. This one has.

Oh, yea. According to the serial number, it is has a 1987 manufacture date--if that makes any difference. And here's my first refinish--so you can see that I don't intend to hack-job it. Started out black.

If the bass is really talking to you and the price is right, go for it. I quite like the black crinkle ones, really gives them their own character as nobody else ever did a hardware finish like that. I wouldn't refinish it if I were you. They don't have a whole lot of collector value (not yet anyway) but still, it's only original once.

Man, there ain't a sweeter feeling neck than the 1 11/16" widths G&L did back in the 80's. Wide, yet shallow. Not quite as shallow as a Glaub (but close). Combined with those low, wide frets, they play like a dream.

I believe that's the dimensions of my 1986 Lynx. Love that neck.

To my surprise I never posted my most recent acquisition (early October) on this thread: I got it used but once again it has a cool special order feature set: clear red over ash body, slight flame to the neck, matching headstock, streaked Macassar ebony without dots, and Dunlop 3820 "mandolin" frets. This thing is like holding dynamite in your hands. Simply massive tone and sustain like I've never encountered before. Currently strung with GHS Brite Flats combined with a tapered core D'Addario Half Round "B".

Man, I wanted that bass SO BAD! I put up my '08 USA Jazz V for sale in the classifieds and, of course, this bad boy was GONE before it sold. I ended up taking a trade on an EBMM SR5, which is a great bass, but I can only imagine how much better this particular L1505 is with it's ebony board, ash body, matching headstock, and mandolin frets...

In fact, I'm seriously considering dropping an MFD into my SR5, and/or building a new ash body for my L2500 and turning that into an L1505. Heck, I might do both.

Congratulations! If you EVER need to let it go, you know where to go first.

Very nice Lynx you have there! I have a 84 SB-2 Red pretty close but Maple neck and slab body. Always liked the Rosewood Lynxs. Great bass from a great era.

I live there. I actually drove to the store to get an underpriced Fender ABG. I'd had my eye on that L-1505 for some time as well--watched it disappear for a couple months and then reappear when the buyer decided to not keep it and put it on consignment at the same shop. On my way out the door (with the ABG) that day I stopped and played it and it made my jaw drop. I just had to have it so the next day I drove back down with a couple of items to trade, added a little cash, and took this sweetie home.

But it can work both ways. I also played a gorgeous and rare natural-finished G&L Climax fretless that played and sounded like a dream. While I was trying it out and seriously considering putting a deposit on it, somebody called the store and bought it before I was even done playing.

Played a new U.S. L2000 today. Was surprised to hear an incredibly noisy preamp. Hissed like a banshee in active and treble boost. Hiss was audible even in passive.

Prefer my Tribute to that one.
