I did play a Danelectro through the same cord and amp with no issues right before I played the L2000. I also played a Rockbass through the same gear after I tried the G&L with no issues, so I'm pretty certain it was a problem with that particular bass.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a difficult order. Ash body is standard with translucent colors (such as this red); flame on the neck either could have been luck of the draw (it's not heavily figured) or an upcharge. Deleting fret markers is a stated option, and matching headstock is a readily available upcharge option. As for the frets, the bass options page doesn't mention it, but Dunlop vintage 3820 fretwire is a standard option for the guitars, so G&L has the fretwire in stock and it probably wasn't a big deal to spec it.
This thing is awesome. Can you just have a dealer order a bass with these kinds of options?
I like the small fretwire. I have more trouble avoiding fret buzz on some basses with jumbo frets. The tone on this one is woodier and can sound smooth, round and jazzy. But of course it can do the slap and thumb popping thing to a T (even if I can't).

Went back to the shop to look at the SB-2 again. Played a Fender Jazz five first. Nice bass with that smooth sound to it.
Picked up the SB2 and plugged in immediately after playing the Fender. Turned on the amp, changed no settings, and almost blew the top of my head off with it.
Hokey Smokes! That pickup is HOT. Had to grab the volume knob and back it WAY off. The Fender was dimed, but not anywhere near the volume. It did sound good though.

Here is a bit of a real G&L. An old LB-100. How many of these have you seen before? It's a first for me. Lovin the "Sienna Burst" finish. She's very light, has growly P tone. Not quite as aggressive as an SB-1 (a little warmer) thanks to the factory Alinico 5 pickup. Still, she has plenty of high-end sheen and grind and really warms up when the tone is knocked back.
Action is super low and neck is wide, but thin front to back. She only weighs 8.5 - 9 lbs (according to my shoulder). Built quality is AMAZING. Super tight neck pocket, level frets, etc. Man, what a score I got! Anyway, pictures coming!

hey, can you guys tell me about a SB2? i have convinced myself i need a P/J.
i bought my first G&L last christmas, a L2000. it has pretty much become my number one, beating out my lakland and am fenders - P & J.
i am also looking at a am deluxe series P.

The thing with the SB-2 is, you have to pretty much like it as-is. The pickups and routings are in such a way that make direct replacement with a wide variety of products very difficult. I got a Squier VM Jaguar for about $250 less than it would cost for a Tribby SB2, and it'll only cost me $100 to throw on a BAII bridge. I like the pickups, but if I ever decide to experiment, the platform is there. I also like the dual concentric volume & tone controls, which, to me, would have to be an essential mod on a SB-2. Now, I'm not really slammin' on the SB-2; it's just not my cup of tea, for these reasons. They sound fantastic in their own right, and I do enjoy having the extra fret, since high E comes into play. I absolutely LOVE the JB2, and would not mind owning a JB at some point. There should be a Tribby version.
SB2's are awesome. That's all I really have to say...no time for details other than you are going to get a more P sound from them than a J, because the J pup essentially is the tone knob.

The jazz pickup is apparently largely there to "flavor" the p-pickup. Played the same amp, with the same settings back to back with a Fender jazz. Plugged in the SB2 second and nearly blew my eardrums. Massive wall of sound at the same settings. Giving it serious consideration at $450 with hard shell case.

plankspanker - that would be ok. i am pretty much a "as is" guy. everything i own is stock except for a fralin in my P.
i will turn a tone knob here and there, but mostly they stay wide open.
onionpuzzle - i will not have a chance to try one before i buy. with just the P p-up on, is the P sound much different than a Fender P?

I have a tribute l2500 and it a cherry color, I made a trade with a dude I, got his g&l and he got my Warwick proline from 92 five strings i'm not sure who's luckiest, but I like the wide neck and thickness, the tones and sound of humbucker and switch to single coil, from active to passive made it all. I like Warwick, but some how I didn't like the body-shape, the sound s great, but I miss the humbucking sound, same time I didn't like the string spacing, they where to close, I was used to 2.0 spacing on my yamaha bbn4III, and Warwick was 0.16 I think
SB-2 with J pup rolled off is very Fender P-like. Note, Fender P will be a bit more versatile Tone wise, because it has a tone knob, and the SB2 does not have a tone knob......though, Mag PUPS stock on those are hot hot hot. I use 90% of the P and 40-70% of the J. I like that environment, and I dig the neck, too.
