Typically, the black headstocks were namm basses, though you could order one that way.

Please send it to me before you chuck it in the woodstove...

1981 CAR/maple L1000...this is my favorite G&L of all time, and I've had many, many of them. It's clean, clear, aggressive, articulate, and huuuge!

1980 L1000: thick, meaty, bigger than big, and still has a nice-ish top end.
Note: ebony can have real nice figuring if it isn't dyed black:

1983 SB1: "the best 1951 P reissue ever." Bigger, hotter, meaner, grindier...but, roll the volume and tone shut a little, and it's still old school mototwn.

Theoretically, these only came in red, white and blue.
This one is that same color in the control cavity, and it's all shrunk, and weather checked a bit...so if it's a refin, it's nitro, and an old refin.
It's got that 1 11/16, kinda shallow neck that I really like from that era.
One of my buds from babp found this online, in the used section of a music store near nashville and didn't want it (!!!), and pm'd me about it (!!!!!!!!!). I gave $450, shipped, for it with the very nice stock G&G case. Unbelievable!

I believe my '83 SB-2 has the best tone of all the basses I've ever owned. It really suits me well. I watched her hanging high out of reach at the local GC for over a year. Finally one day last summer I walked in and it was on the floor marked way down as a blow-out. I played it for 5 minutes and started shaking. I offered my preferred salesman an even lower amount and he said yes: $400 in great shape, with OHSC. Best deal ever for me.
