G&L Club Part 2

Anyway, so last night was my second time with the bass in a band setting, first time with rounds on there... ... ... AMAZING! the other guys in the band couldnt stop talking about how incredible I sounded. "You're not at all too loud, but I can hear you so clearly through everybody!" - That was my favorite comment! That's what I've been searching for since I was 14 years old and first picked up the bass (I'm 24 now)

I've been a G&L convert since I got my first L2500 in late 2009. I always love the tone in most settings, but where I found that it REALLY shines is in a dense, loud, rockin' band mix. Even more so in single-coil mode. Lines that tend to get lost a little with my other basses are totally clear with the L2500.

I still have/use other basses, but when I play with a dense, loud band, the L2500 is the way to go.

My main bass for 20 years was a 1981 L2000Ke, it had an ebony board with no lines.

Well, maybe you could recommend strings for me? I have flats on my Telecaster bass, nickel rounds on my L-1000, and stainless rounds on my Am Dlx Precision. I was thinking either flats or maybe tapewounds for the fretless.

Depends what you like.
I like more of a traditional Jaco-kinda-thing, and therefore always used fresh rounds.

I do like the black tapes, and DA now make some.

For my personal taste, the BEST sounding strings on my fretless L2500 (ebony board) have been TI Superalloys (rounds). I did try some D'Addario half-rounds for a while, but they just didn't work for me on the L2500 (though I have them on several other fretli).

I'd like to try some DRs and maybe some Dean Markley SR2000s, but the default standard is TI rounds for my fretless G&L.

SR2000s are awesome! I have them on my L-2000 (fretted) and I honestly can't remember being as in love with a set of strings (the first time I tried them) as I have been now after 1 week with these on.

Thanks for the interesting suggestions. I have a spare set of Pyramid Gold flats, I will try these first. I kind of had the imperssion that fretless requires flats. Oh well, I was wrong. I have no idea what strings are on the bass as it arrives (some time next week). I have had to wait for several shipmaents as of late. I wonder what it is, going on with my corner of the globe.

Numbers are overrated, but...

The official number-giver-outer has been absent from TB for quite a long time, so a few folks have picked up where they think the numbers ended around 380 or so (I believe mine was one of the last officially given out - mine is #380).

Just make something up.

Hey guys,

Have a quick question.

MY USA SB-2 just started to get pretty noisy when I crank the bridge p/u up. Seems to quiet down a bit when I touch the strings or other metal part of the bass.

Is this a grounding issue?

Possibly. How old is it?

You say it quiets down a bit when you touch the strings. How much? Enough to reduce the noise to normal?

If the bass is old, it could be that the bridge ground has become marginal. It happens and it's a common issue, and not just to G&L instruments. Bridge grounding information can be found here.

I'll assume a modern-design P/J style SB-2.

Caveats:

1. The bridge pickup is typical MFD - hot. Cranked up it'll grab any noise in the environment. Turning the volume down and balancing the volume controls ain't a bad thing.

2. The bridge pickup is single coil, which defaults to being a bit of a noise antenna.

So before we get all crazy and blame the bass, let's check the environment to make sure that something in the way of a noisemaker hasn't been added. It's also important to make sure that the amp's earth ground via the power connection is working properly (this is a noise and safety deal).

It's an 08 sb2. It's only unbearably loud when I am blasting the pups.

I Think it may be due to the amp being plugged into the same outlet as my pc. It's the only room in this 140 year old house with grounded outlets.

Computers, unless you've got one of those fancy ones with a window in the side, are amazingly quiet.

Hi Guys I use Carvin Strings on my L2500 they are.
5511 5-string Electric Bass Strings
and 5012 5 String Tapewound La Bella's on my AC50 and Michael Kelly
Prices are good and they last a long time. When I was giging 2-3 times a month olny changed they twice a year and mostly after summer and playing outside

Interestingly enough, If if use a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter on the pc, the noise from the bass gets cut in half. Who knows what's up with this old wiring. Interesting read. I am gonna spend some more time tomorrow on your link.
