Stand your bass up on the floor and in good light look down edges of the neck. You should see at least a little bit of curve towards the front (that's what relief is, more curve equals more relief). If it is flat, or it curves to the back (back-bow - not enough relief), you should release (loosen) the truss rod.
Buzzing between and head and where you are fretting the string generally means the neck is too flat. It might be other things too, like the nut is cut too low, or you have high frets. What you should do is release the truss rod 1/8th of a turn (counter-clockwise), then wait at least two days. If the neck is very flat or back-bowed it can take time for the relief to come back into it. Be patient. If it's still buzzing after a couple days, loosen the rod another 1/8th turn and wait again.
Do not force the rod and use the correct size allen wrench.
Essentially, what's happening is the strings are buzzing against the frets because there isn't enough curve or relief in the distance between the nut and the fret behind the one you're playing. If all else on the neck is perfect, the only way to really "fix" the problem is to raise the nut a hair. Otherwise, you can adjust the relief a bit, but that will affect the action going forward, too.

just got my '81 L-1000 back from Mike Lull yesterday after a set-up and new strings. he gave it a clean bill of health, with the exception of a fret level/dressing sometime down the line, but other than that it plays and sounds great. i plugged it into an SWR redhead at his shop and am blown away at the tone comin out of this thing. i figured i'd like the humbucker mode the best, but i think the single coil setting is pretty sweet. the single coil w/bass boost just melts your face. i can't stop smiling when i play it. anyway, can i be part of the club?

My BABP LE2500K...gigged it again last night, and I really, really like this bass.
The single coil mode really ought to just be stock on these; I can't fathom why it isn't.

i'm still in awe that i found my '81. such a thing of beauty. i've always wanted a vintage fender but the prices are rediculous. besides, what better vintage fender to own than a Leo era G&L? i think my fenders are gonna be collecting dust now.

Yep, 30th. I walked into Todd's Music Express, saw the white pickups, took the damn thing of the wall, and walked out the store with it. Stupid G&L, had too be so damn nice. I haven't touched my other basses since I got this in November.
