G&L Club Part 2

Does anybody here know what happens to the G&L warranty when you mod the electronics? I realize that I wouldn't have any more coverage for electronics. But, does it void the entire warranty, or would I have coverage for craftsmanship issues? I'm most concerned with neck/truss rod coverage.

Some of you probably know I've been contemplating selling my ASAT. I really love playing this bass, but really miss the single-coil sound. Here's the configuration I would like to achieve:

Passive only.
Knobs: VOL TREB BASS
Switches: Pickup select (neck/both/bridge) Neck mode (series/single/parallel or bass boost) Bridge mode (series/single/parallel or bass boost)

Cool!, I had a 81 Hog/maple L2000e back when they first came out, foolishly sold it and had to find another. Finally found a 81 L2000e HOG/Rosewood that really shakes the walls. They are special basses and the HOGs are really fine. Get some pics of that GC L2000e!

Yeah Chef, that rosewood TR was the only concern I had with it when I was deciding to buy it. Funny thing is that I use it all the time now and it puts me right in the deepest spot. Still, I wouldn't have drilled the HOG for it. But, it really makes playing in the deep sweet spot just right, otherwise playing on the neck PUP doesn't get as deep.

Ya takes what ya gets sometimes, and sometimes what ya gets aint so bad.

Just picked this up from the funkycarnivore - a prototype G&L JB-2 semihollow in fullerton red (I like to call it tomato soup red). haven't had it long enough to formulate an opinion other than it looks good and feels like a G&L. F-holes are so sophisticated.

My BABP LE2500K...gigged it again last night, and I really, really like this bass.
The single coil mode really ought to just be stock on these; I can't fathom why it isn't.

Last time I asked a couple more folks took time, so, I'll ask again:

I absolutely love my three L2K's but am quite "newb" in the electronics department. Could you elaborate on the single coil mode?

FWIW, I keep my series/parallel switch in the "non-bass-boost" position. (Not even sure which it is. heh)

Technically, any modification voids the warranty. G&L, however, tends to look at each warranty request on an individual basis. It is possible - likely even - that they would cover non-electronic issues for your bass if one arose post-mod, but it is NOT guaranteed. If you want to be certain of warranty coverage, don't mod. If this bass is newer and has a CNC neck (not bi-cut), the chance of a neck issue is slim unless the instrument is abused.

Know what you're doing here. This will not be a dead-quiet circuit. Either pickup in single coil with the other humbucking will generate SC noise. As noted in the circuit description, the .1mfd caps on the coil select switches disrupt the hum-canceling balance of the coils and cause each pickup to be less than humbucking, even in series of parallel modes.

I agree, for the sake of a different switch the single coil mod should be standard on the L-2X00 range. The big question is 'Inners or Outers'? (I'm currently on outers)

I am kicking myself as I just missed out on a USA L-2500 in Cherry burst on Fleabay, I was on TB when I should have been bidding. Not many come up over this side of the pond. Oh well there will be another sometime.

Why? More than anything else, the original circuit is attributable to Leo and is therefore part of Leo's Legacy. The circuit in the BABP LE basses, called the "K" circuit, was actually some time before those LEs were envisioned. However, it was never advertised or made openly available until recently.

Now, as I've said at more than one place (not here because it would get lost in a day's posts)...

The "K" model switching, which offers series/single/parallel, is available as a NO-CHARGE OPTION on new L-2000, L-2500, and ASAT basses ordered from G&L. Be sure to have your salesperson order the bass as a "K" model; for example, L-2000K. They will have to call the factory directly, as their reps may or may not be up to speed on this.

Why not make it standard?
The addition of the single coil mode makes it a much more flexible instrument, I think.

I don't see the logic in having it "a secret option."
