I would be very greatful for anyones thoughts, opinions, suggestions, etc as i look for a good bass amp or rig. I am fairly new to the Bass world and stumbled across an L2000 (USA) that I had to have, even if I do not yet deserve it skill-wise. I had been learning on a cheapo Epiphone EB-0 and a Fender Rumble 75w amp. I can't put this (L2000) thing down and want to upgrade my amp set up.
I am still exploring music styles so I need something with a good range of sound. Everything from emulating jazz double bass, to rock, punk, rockabilly, blues, not quite there yet with the slap and funk sound, but who knows? I don't need anything ultra-portable at this point as the closest I will be to gigging is joining friends or casual jam sessions. At the same time, I don't need a monster stack that will shake the plaster off my walls.
So far, I keep hearing pretty good things about Ampeg, Hartke and G-K. Open to other ideas, of course. I am thinking of cabinets with 2x10's, 2x12's or 4x10s., Or??? I am leaning towards sep. Head-cab set ups for flexibility and possible upgrades down the road.
Besides recommendations, I'd appreciate thoughts on Tubes vs. SS.
pro's? Cons? Tube preamp-SS power amps? Are amps typically fine-tuned to match their brand of cabinets? Or is it okay to mix and match? Are certain brands known for reliability?
As you can see I have a lot of questions and there are so many options out there. And it is almost impossible to do a decent A-B comparison anywhere. The bigger stores have the most aggressive sales people and so many distractions, and the smaller stores have smaller selections.
Thanks in advance for your comments!
Blair.
