G&L Club Part 4

Alan I am good in the cab department. This was an answer I gave Hey Blair in a post on page 4 of our G&L Club part 4 page, not me asking the question. But your opinion would be very appreciated and valued to me if I was looking for a cabinet or amp. Thanks again Joe.:)

Personally, I like my G&L's through a Mesa M9 and LDS two 2x8+ horn stacked vertical.
I like a fairly modern tone though, and, you might not.

I really like my Epifani UL502 amp and 2 UL112 cabs. I've played tons of gigs in lots of genres and that rig has never failed to deliver. Tonight I have a straight up rock gig at a large theater; I'll be using the Epifani with a Jazz Bass. Last week I played a duo gig with a mandolin player; I used the Epifani and an E-C strung L2500. I also had a rock gig last week with the Epifani and a fretless L2500. I used to play with a boogaloo/blue/funk band with a Pbass - used the Epifani. I've done jazz, country, western/cowboy, funk, blues, etc. all with that rig and it has always delivered what I want.

What I like about my particular rig is that the mids cut through really nice. My bass can easily be heard, and I get compliments from other musicians and pro sound guys all the time on how great my bass tone is for any given situation. It's never honky or nasally. It has big lows and crisp, clean highs. It's not overly bright, but it's always plenty bright for my taste. I always feel like it portrays my basses as they are. I'm never worried about what the amp will do to the bass tone; I always know that my tone will come from the bass - not the amp.

This is all my personal opinion and experience with that rig. I've had plenty of others that sounded great, too. In fact, I really like what an SWR amp does to the G&L tone. The aural enhancer does nice things to the G&L's mids, while the highs come through more sparkly and the lows are nice and tight. I personally didn't like the added mid-range growl of my GK 1001RB-II with the G&L. I also used to have an Aguilar AG500 rig that was great, but the Epifani was more transparent to me - meaning it sounded more like whatever bass I put in and less like the amp.

As Chef says, though, it all depends on what sound you like. I've had some SUPERB results from a friends Fender BXR100 with both my G&Ls. It sounds like bass should sound. Go figure...

LowFreeK:
We have the same leanings;)

G&L's are mid-rich. Mid heavy even. Raw. Low-fi perhaps even.

So, The epi stuff, cabs in particular, have a bit of mid scoop, and brilliant highs.
This tames some of that raw-mid-heavy thing, adds some hi-fi sheen back in; which, for me, works really well.

G&L>M9>Epi UL410 works quite well.

The fretboard looks darker in the picture, its much browner in person.

Beauty !

Up close it looks much browner. I think it's actually rosewood.

The wood color doesn't mean much with G&L, as they didn't dye their ebony black. The tightness of the grain is the best (only?) way to tell the difference.

It could be rosewood, but that would be kinda odd for an '81. Not odd for an '82. Is yours a late '81? Curious minds...

I haven't unbolted the neck to check and probably won't anytime soon. As I like the current setup and don't want it messed with. The serial number would seem to be right in the middle of the 81 dates, but I know that can't be completely relied on. I've owned a bass with with an ebony board before that had quite a bit of brown in it, so I'm not totally unfamiliar with the idea.

Realized that I have a guitar with a rosewood board and a bass with an ebony board in the house right now and the grain does resemble the ebony board a lot more than the rosewood board on the guitar. So as of right now, I'm going to go with ebony.

my us SB-2 black/rosewood has been seeing most of my gig action for a while now. I also bought a BABP Wunkay a year ago that I've barely touched. go figure!

How would you compare your BABP Wunkay to your SB-2? Do you find that the split coil MFD in the SB-2 is noticeably hotter than the humbucker in the L1000? I got lucky and was able to grab one of those BABP Wunkays off ebay. It's a nice bass, and I don't ever see myself letting it go, but I usually reach for my SB-2 first.

'80 L-1000 Hog/Ebony bought from TB. Labella 760FL. My old-school thump machine.

'81 L-1000 bought from local classifieds. Chromes. Modern flatwound tone. Lots of mojo on this one. 11 lbs. :help:

'87 El-Toro bought from TB. Ken Smith Burners. J-bass with a booster rocket inside! Only 9 lbs, smaller body with deep contours, 1 5/8" neck, a joy to play.

'92 L-2000 bought new from local G&L dealer, the one that started it all. SIT Silencers. Sounds best in series mode, monster tone that cuts through anything.

'06 L-2500 Tribute bought new from local dealer. TI Jazz flats with a Slinky .135 B. The Swiss Army Knife bass, I can cop any tone with it. Did Ken's bridge mod to it, Hipshot Ultralights, and single-coil switching with the inner coils.

Here is my experience with amps & G&Ls:

1. Ampeg BA-115 combo (100W) - Decent, with some limitations. Just a single 15" has a sound which I was not particularly happy with.

2. Eden WTX-260 & Schroeder 1210L (260W) - Awful. When I pushed the G&L L2500 harder, it peaked the amp and sounded terrible. It was decent at lower volumes, but in a band setting - it didn't sound so great.

3. Acoustic Image Clarus II & Schroeder 1210L (400W) - my current rig. I really like this combination. If you believe the advertisement / company literature, AI designed the amps to be as clear as possible, to be used with upright basses. (Makes sense - if you have a $20K upright, you want it to sound like your bass, not colored by an amp). I've never had a problem with my L2500, and have used it with my G&L JB only once - no problems. I keep all of the EQ flat on the amp, and on the bass - turned up all the way (volume turned down as needed, use the switches quite a bit). The only problems I have with this rig is when I use it with my Pedulla Thunderbass and try to push it hard (say outside gig or low stage volume). Works GREAT with a G&L. I also like the weight - I'm into a venue in one trip - gig bag, amp, and speaker cab.

4. 1964 Ampeg B-15N Portaflex. Fun, but make sure to turn the G&L down. I'm not a big fan of the portaflex cabinet, so I run this amp into my Schroeder 1210L. A great sound.
Perfect for practicing - it definitely colors the bass' sound to be darker.

I honestly have not spent enough time w/ the wunkay to render an opinion on comparing it to the SB-2
