G&L Club Part 4

Hi all,

I would like to join the club :-)

My 2012 G&L Tribute L2000 ...

Only had it for about 24 hours but enjoying it so far ... these basses are praised as being tonally very versatile although I admit that I am only really liking the tone I get running: active, both pickups, parallel. Maybe I can also find use for bridge pickup only mode, but still ... Great bargain.

What strings are people preferring on these? The bass came with some stock strings that are OK but I will probably switch to Elixir nanowebs ... But maybe people who have owned one of these for a while can suggest some "match made in Heaven" strings?

Who here owns or has played one of the new M2000 or M2500 basses? Can't find much out there on these yet. I've got a blackburst with wood binding M2500 on the way. I couldn't resist. :D I liked my L2500 I once owned but didn't love it. Pups were too hot and I didn't connect with all the switches and boost only pre. I really like the idea of the new pre and a bit more tame pups in the new M series.

I played my Tribute L2000 at practice tonight for the first time. I usually play a J bass but decided to try and just play the L2000 for all songs. I was quite positively surprised. The L2000 plays really well and I could get several good tones for rock and bluesy material. Really positively surprised.

One thing, though. My L2000 has a really high pitched ringing sound which I think originates from the bridge. If I tap the bridge I get a really high pitch bell-like ringing which travels all the way to through to the amp. It is easily audible once you hear it ... the ringing is also occurs during normal play ... Of course especially when slapping. Anyone else heard this before?

It doesn't help to cover the whole bridge with a hand ...

Bass tone from the instrument is better than expected but I could do without the "ding" at every transient :-)

I believe that is the "spring ping" people talk about. It's the pickup adjustment screws not your bridge. All you need is a bit of foam or rubber it's a really easy fix.

Yep, G&L's originally had a little piece of gray rubber material in each spring for damping. At some point BBE thought it wise to eliminate them. They sold thousands of basses (guitars too?) for years without the spring dampers.

The resulting 'spring ping' was worst on the early JB-2's, as the s/c pickups were super microphonic. Those pickups "heard" everything, and many JB-2's were unusable because of it. Makes you wonder how they ever left the factory like that.
