ThisMFDs are really addictive. (I speak from experience.) However, they're hot in output and if you back the volume off to 70-75% you're in very nice P-Bass pickup land. Best of both worlds. The SB-1 has that lovely slightly more carved body seen in the Kiloton as well. Lots to recommend that bass.
Ergonomics first. It's so awkward for me to play sitting down. And that cutout on the bottom of the body is really small. Almost seems like it was made more as a small person's bass. As a finger style player I find that back pickup position not really to my liking. Probably my technique, but I prefer a more centered position.
Fallout is on my list too. I like the tone better and the ergonomics should be better sitting.
Man, I sort of like my MFDs dimed at the bass. I love that aggressive MFD for much of what I play though it's too much for some of that older stuff (think Beatles).MFDs are really addictive. I can't wait to get my SB-2 back with the 500k pots. That'll be MFD turned up to 11.
I find I can temper the hot output of the MFD pickups by using flatwound strings, tone adjust, playing in passive mode & to a large degree simply changing the right hand attack & hand position.
The higher-value pots will shunt half as much signal to ground when wide open.
Meaning more highs. making it even more aggressive/louder than normal.
My Yamaha comes with a standard 500k pot for the willpower pickup. It's obnoxiously loud. I don't ever need to turn it up higher than about 2. That pickup also has no tone control. Thank god the neck pickup does.
All 3 of the US GL basses I've owned had factory alnico pickups installed. (Lb-100, JB-2, L-1000).
I love the sound of those pickups!

Totally understand. I have about a dozen basses and my SB-2T and it is, by far, my most favorite.It's funny, I got an SB-2, and now it's the bass I judge every other bass by. No tone control, and now I don't want one on anything else either
It is pretty.
It is light.
The neck is fantastic.
The tone is so defined. It was described once by a guitar player for the host band at an open jam in Austin, Texas, as "The tone to die for".
I get more comments on the beauty and tone of this bass than any other.
I even like it more than my LB-100 which, IMHO, is the ultimate P.

Normally, yes. I assume they have one of the rare alnico pickup L-1000s.
You really need to get your hands on a Kiloton.
I know we spoke about it a while ago, and I think it'll be right up your alley.
Specifically single coil mode.
The smaller body and the pickup placement on the Kiloton both really interest me for sure!
I wish it was offered without the pickguard, though.
