almost certainly the Placentia line is cheaper to produce, and it's "jazz bass", but it's frankly kinda gross of them to put out something so bad with their name on it implying that it's of a certain quality, when in reality it's just a cash grab

Im pretty sure the Placentia series was designed with a$250-$280 price point in mind. They rotate through them (guitars and bass) as the Daily Pick/Stupid Deal of the Day at those prices about once a month each. If some unaware person buys one at full price, then it's like a bonus, but I'm pretty sure they're designed to be the discount option.

Spring Ping (MFD picking up pickup springs due to no foam in springs)
5 String Basses not fitting G&G Cases
Battery compartments (did not used to have them)

Unresolved:
Lack of shielding
Tuning key separation (key comes loose from tuning post; frequently due to case not fitting at least that is what caused mine)

Probably more than that, but those ones are the ones I have experienced.

Just a heads up for anyone wondering about their newer Tribute bass.
Mine is about a year old and yesterday I noticed some crazy overtones while I was playing. Popped the pickup out today and sure enough! Springs with no foam.
Shoved some in there and all is right with the world. Or at least my pickup.

My 2 cents on the Ed vs. The Mavericks is I'm sure there was more dialolgue that went on outside of what Ed mentioned in his Facebook post. I too find myself always changing settings on my L2k depending on the song in my band and I love that but live I tend to stick with one tone to not mess with the sound guy or what's already working. Maybe he was over-tinkering song to song and that's how the BL noticed because I highly doubt anyone outside of the bass player can really notice subtle bass tone changes in a set. I could be wrong and probably am ;)

For future reference, did you put foam in the springs or just under the pickup on the black area between the springs? Or both?
