Hey gang, I know we've gotten good info from Greg of Rocket Music on the changes to G&L's Build to Order basses, but here's another good summary of unfortunate news about the disappearance of so many options, like fretboard radius and block inlays. Interestingly, Gordon says he and other dealers are lobbying G&L about this, so maybe some options will return. I certainly hope so.

In happier G&L news, I brought my M-2500 to play with a band for the first time in a few years. As always, it completely rocked. My new bandmates noticed the huge tone instantly.

Yep. For years now it's been an Option Order only model...no Fullerton Deluxe or even Tribute version available. Now it'll be vapor. Too bad. It's an interesting alternative to an L-series...something a little different.
Oh, snap! I missed that they had switched to a gig bag for BTO's by default. I'm so glad you shared that link!
And I, for one, am REALLY glad to see a gig bag as the new default case. 2022 into early 2023, I had 4 or 5 deliveries with broken headstocks, cracked neck pockets, and other finish damage to the bodies emanating from the neck pocket. That universal hardshell case is great once you have the bass... but it could be brutal for shipping damage. That chronic rattling G string tuner issue is another example.
It's strange that that sort of damage comes in waves, but it does. The past year or so has been a particularly trying time. Some years? Nothing.
So, hey - if you ordered a BTO from me recently, please catch up with me about your case preference. We'll get it sorted out, and I will try to reach out to everyone individually, as well.

I suppose a gig bag is OK if it gets to me in one piece, but as soon as it leaves my place for a gig it must be in a hard case. I guess if you have a Fender-compatible hard case it would fit.
So.... given a choice of a broken headstock, a cracked neck pocket, other finish damage, or a rattling G string tuner..... mmmm, yes, let me think.... Yes, the tiny little rattle will do me FINE!
Interesting. I haven't used a hardshell case in a long, long time. Once I discovered Mono and being able to sling it over my shoulder, I was totally over hardshells. There's a rack in the back here at Rocket with 5 or 6 hardshells for my personal basses. The dust is thick on those cases. LOL
But, yeah, I imagine the bass world is split pretty evenly on this subject: those that love hardshells and those that love gig bags. I should probably stock some hardshells just for those that love them.
Same here. I just keep the hardcases in case I ever want to sell the basses that came with them. Just yesterday I cleaned up three Yamaha hard cases that were in the attic gathering dust.
Especially in the G&L world, people seem to give a lot of value to the OHSC and the COA. I bought a used Legacy at the local Guitar Center and it came without either. I ordered them both from G&L just to make sure it is complete.
I like both gig bags and hard shell cases. I think they both have their uses. For shipping, my JB came to me in a dream... no wait... in a gig bag. Yeah, that's it! My L2K came in a hard shell case, sans damage. I have heard horror stories about clowns in shipping terminals basically playing hockey with packages marked fragile, maybe I was lucky with the folks who handled my package. That totally didn't sound right. With the people who handled my BASSES! That's better. Whew!
From past discussions here, I'm sure that it is indeed a split opinion. I take meticulous care of my instruments and I don't take a bass to a gig without using a hard case. There is only one bass (out of a dozen I own) that I don't have a hard case for, and that bothers me at times. I have bought a hard case separately for a new instrument more than once, but I've only bought one gig bag, and that was for the only bass I own that I haven't been able to find a hard case for.
I prefer hardshell cases for the storage aspect, but gig bags are easier for transporting.
That said, having had enough G&Ls with hard cases that I've seen them from the 80s to current, I have to say the current ones, while they look nice, are the worst of the lot. IMO, of course. And that's including the 90s-era molded cases where the feet were prone to breaking off. They don't feel as well made as the 80s tolex cases, don't secure the basses as well, and just don't feel as sturdy. Plus they're like an inch or two longer than all my other cases. They seem more like a cheaper generic "fit all" case than a case specifically for the bass.
So, current hardshell vs gig bag, I'd keep my $100 and take the gig bag.

The feet broke off the plastic cases. Much better than breaking the instrument inside which the new ones seem prone to do (particularly on 5 string basses).
