G&L Club Part 7

It took about 2 years and 2 months but it finally came together.
IDK when it's gonna be shipped but it's good to see it done.
Here's a custom Matador in Purple Fade over mahogany, quartersawn 3A flame roasted maple neck with ebony fingerboard, Clear Satin finish. #CS2303001 is headed to UpFront Guitars in Bellingham, Massachusetts

I much prefer a bass with a single volume. I've tried all kinds of things to convert my SB-2 into a bass with a master volume. (Mine doesn't have the tone control, and I didn't want to cut and drill, etc., to change it.) I tried blend controls with audio tapers, linear tapers, and MN tapers, both grounded and ungrounded. I didn't like any of them. All of them had a very sudden swap of positions. The MN100k ungrounded was the best--smoother than the rest. And all of them--no exceptions here--seemed to take some of the punch and grit out of the SB-2. I have no explanation for that. What I finally did that worked best is this: I bought a concentric set of B250k pots and used those for the individual pickup volumes. Those only took up one hole in the pickguard. In the other hole, I just used one of the regular A250k pots as a master volume. It works beautifully. All the punch and drive of the SB-2 with a single volume. And the linear tapers on the concentric B250k pot make it easier to blend the pickups smoothly.

Since you're already used to a passive blend pot on another bass, if you want a blend pot, I recommend you find out what value that pot is and if it's grounded or ungrounded. Start out by trying that and go from there if needed.

Do you ever favor the bridge pickup over the neck?

I never do with an SB2 and wire them up with a master volume, a J pickup volume (stacked pot in a regular SB2) that feeds into the master volume, and a tone. That way I can vary the bridge pickup relative to the neck up to both at 100%, and then adjust the overall volume if necessary. Depending on exactly how G&L wires up the SB2-T it can be a very simple change (move one wire end best case). I guess I didn't feel the need to make that mod to the now your SB2-T while I had it.

^^^^for those of you who can remember the ultimately happy story of that bass — enough time has passed that I can at last just look on it for what it is, and forget about the tremendous amount of bother that was needed to make the story happy — it finally seems to me once again simply the bass I ordered in the fall of 2020.

For those who don't remember the story, just feast on the specs: 7 lbs empress body, shell pink, 3-ply white pg, MFD split pickup, CLF Research knobs; 1½" nut, 9½" radius natural satin quartersawn neck, 45-105 Rotosound Swing Bass steels.

I'm still very proud of how quickly it sold, once it had got back home :smug:

I'm pretty much old school and tend to favor the neck pickup. The controls work fine for me, but having a couple of other basses that are Volume, Blend, Tone, I like that configuration and was thinking about modding the SB2-T to that.
By the way, that SB-2-T is my favorite of all my basses and I get more comments on the tone than any other bass. These days I have to play 5 strings a lot, but when I can play 4s, 9 times out of 10, the SB2-T gets the nod.

I have owned both and currently own an El Toro. To me, the L2K and El Toro have much the same musical DNA, but I wouldn't characterize the El Toro as more refined. I love the heft of each note with that bass, and it can get pretty aggressive when you open up the tone control and preamp.
I can tell you it absolutely slays any other jazz bass and eats it for dinner.

Man, I hate how rare these are in lefty configuration, and how quickly they get snatched up when one presents itself.
I sometimes regret not ordering an L-1000 instead of the SB-1, but I always lament the lack of the El Toro in their remotely current offerings.
Perhaps a CLF re-issue one day in the future, but I don't think they offer those in lefties anyway.
