That is surprising. They ought to be able to make that work better, seeing as it's an active setup but probably they use a passive pan which is all too common. Oh well.

That was my first choice. Long lead time (i received projections of 6 to 12 weeks). Going with DR flats and its taken 3 orders to get a merchant that actually had inventory and could ship in a timely fashion.

uh oh
I play in a room that has issues with buzzy -- even with a lot of copper cavity shielding
and those modern single coil hum cancelling designs.
My impulsive side may have taken me down a sorry road.

The G&L's I have do not have any shielding that I can see . There are a few buzzy rooms around town that might be an issue with my M series basses. But I don't have to worry about that since I recently took a hiatus from gigging.
If you like the bass enough, shielding it yourself is an option.
Chef that sucks that the G&L didn't do if for you. But at least you had the option of returning it.

The room that gives me the most noise issues is the one I practice in. Long story -- remains a mystery.
I modified a Korean Zon RT with Aguilar noiseless single coil pickups and the hot OPB-3 -- and had it copper foiled in every cavity including pickup cavities.
The noise is mostly under control, but some days the EMI is worse than others. Just random. It's a mystery.
But that bass is a great player. (so why did I want an MJ5?)
That Zon was picked up used.
I'm not sure I'd want to go through the same unresolved story with a new bass (with a price increase) that I'd have to shield and based on everything I've been through I couldn't be certain of the outcome.
Guess I'll have to see what its redeeming values may be.
I have no noise issues at all with the M2500 or any true humbucker bass I've had in that room.

To date, (and I've tried maaaaannnnnyyy), Nord Fat stacks are the only "humbucking single coil" I actively like.

single coils, and live with the hum; supplemented with as much good shielding and grounding as you can get.
Love those. They're the only pickups I want, if I'm playing a 'Jazz Bass' or some variant. I've never actually had to use the humcancelling coils though. Always passive. Great pickup.
That's not the first complaint concerning the MJ-5 balance control taper that I've read about on TB. By contrast, my MJ-4 balance control works well....not as broad of a taper as some others I have, but not as abrupt as what the MJ-5 owners have been reporting. Mine is also very quiet, and the 3-band EQ responds as advertised.
OTOH, I wasn't impressed with how it sounded with the stock DA XL170 strings. I put set of TI Jazz Rounds on it.....now it sounds great. Kinda a finicky bass, I can easily see how some may not cotton to it at all.

Unfortunately, no. I'd be seriously tempted. I sold my Fender Jazz V because I strongly prefer my M-2500, but I'd love to replace it with a passive G&L JB5 if it would have the standard G&L five string neck. The slightly narrower string spacing really works for me. I'm not really interested in the MJ-5, because it seems to stray too far from classic J-bass for my tastes.
Of course, a five-string SB-1 or SB-2 would do nicely as well!
Sorry to hear about this, Chef. It sucks to pay for a new bass and it is not satifactory.
I own a G&L M2000 Tribute and found the same thing about the tone knob. I wonder if others with this kind of electronic package found the same thing? A lack of nuance other than one degree off center?

Happily trending in my own peculiar direction.
it's what i've been looking for, a focused and punchy tone that's pretty darn deep, it goes great with the octave too, because it's focused and still bright enough to keep the sub from getting too loose and open, don't get me wrong i like the whole jamerson thing, but the sb-2 is just more appropriate for what i play and more present in the mix
