I'm trying out different strings on my l2500. I'm new to the l series basses, and trying gto decide what works best. I like the tension of the stock daddarios but they are a little clanky. I do like a bright string however. Any suggestions?

To avoid "clank"......simplest option would be to cut some highs or upper mids or raise the action a hair? I like flats, but for many they're not clanky enough
Another option is DR Black Beauties, which I love, but they can get sticky IME and some avoid them for that reason. I have L1K and L2K, one with La Bella low tension flats and the other with Roto Sound Swing Bass lights.

I've tried that, but it seems like whatever I'm using has a wide enough Q that it gets rid of frequencies I want to keep as well. I always like to start with something as close to what I'm trying to get to as possible.
Thanks very much. I agree about TI being tight lipped. I sent them a question yesterday about their "Super Alloy" that they use. I got a nice reply this morning that it was a "special ferro-magnetic alloy" that was made for them. Obviously they consider that proprietary info as well. I was just curious if it was Alloy 52, which is used in GHS's Pressurewounds and the Roto Nexus strings among others. But though I learned nothing, it was thoughtful of them to reply to some schmuck in the US. No more string talk for me on this thread. Out here.

I love the Super Alloys and the Pressurewounds. The no longer made GHS Progressives are nice as well. Found a new set for sale on Reverb a couple weeks ago. Alloy52 is good stuff for strings.
Just got informed my BTO ordered in early August is already shipping out.

Yes, I have a set of Roto Nexus strings on my LB-100 and a set of PWs on my SB-2, both Alloy 52 wound strings. With the Nexus on the LB-100, I get a lot of finger noise. Then I watched one of the late Mo Foster's Rotosound videos about those strings, and he got almost none. I guess I need to work on my technique!
Anyone still running SIT Powerwound strings? It was the string G&Ls shipped with at one point. I have since switched to mostly TI Jazz flats, but I used the SITs for 5 or 6 years. SIT still makes sets that they advertise as being designed for G&L. I assume it is due to winding length for the string through bridges that they used to have.
Huh… I'm curious, so I emailed them and asked them what makes them unique for G&Ls. Will report back if I hear from them.
I use them on several basses. I really like them on the '81 L1k (and Boomers and String Joys). Wed night I put some SIT Power Steels on and I'm not so sure I don't like them better on that bass. I thought is a poor move when G&L stopped shipping their basses with SITs. They are great strings. I have SIT Foundations on my Redburst L2k. (Not a good pic of the best looking bass I have.)

the price drop recently brought it back into reality for me. It was about the same price as what I paid for a BTO early last year before the big increase.

Props to SIT for their quick response. Here's what they said:
"Thanks for reaching out. They are really the same strings except for the length. For a number of years we built string OEM for G&L and many of the USA 5 string models were string through and also required a tapered (recessed) B string. So the G&L 5 string set has custom length on the B with a custom length taper and slightly longer E and A."
Currently also digging Pressurewounds on my sb-2. They are broken in and tuned to D standard. It does something nice for both sound and feel for me. Give it a try!I have a set of the GHS Pressurewounds on my SB-2. They're not bad, and it seems like the longer they're on there, the more I like them. After a few years, they'll probably be my favorite string, then they'll need changed!To me, though, they don't really have the playability of a flatwound. There's more finger noise than a flat, and they feel kinda strange to me. They sound more like a flatwound to me than a roundwound, but not exactly like a flatwound. It's a sound all its own. I tried D'Addario half-rounds a long time ago, and I thought that they didn't sound as good as roundwounds nor play as well as flatwounds. I considered them a nice try that fell flat, but they might be worth another try. Thanks for mentioning them.
