P pickups are a nuanced taste thing.
I'm not surprised it took several tries.
I like Fralins, for sure, but for me and vintage tone its Lollar.
If I want something beefier/balsier, then it's Nordstrand NPVa or EMG Geezers that do it for me.

How do people feel about the P-bass sound of a SB-2 with stock MFDs? May need a P bass tone for an upcoming project, and I prefer a Jazz-type neck, so considering an SB-2.
To me, it's not really a P-bass tone at all, just a P-bass look. An LB-100 would be a P-bass tone. And it appears that G&L only makes the SB-2 as a BTO these days, or as a Tribute.
Have you all seen this? I think it's an amazing opportunity, one that I wish I could take advantage of:

I've owned two G&L's in the past. An early 90's LB100 and a late 90's L2000. Both nice guitars but I moved on to other basses. When I was really into the brand I always wanted a L1000. Fast forward 15 years. There is an early 80's slotted pole pieces, black matted control plate and bridge (82?) available and it has me jonesing a bit. Looks to be Mahogany. Price is decent condition excellent.
I have a couple of questions. How heavy are these? Do they still have the appeal they once had? What would be a fair offer. I mainly play 5 string these days but wouldn't mind having a 4 again. Thanks.

Yesterday afternoon I was able to use the M2000 for a band practice. It was an acoustic practice, so I was not cranking the amp or anything, but everyone was just blown away at the tone. It had everything, it was beefy in the low's, but still punchy and had plenty of sizzle to the sound. Here was my signal chain:
G&L M2000
Mesa Subway D800+
2 x Ampeg SVT 112AV cabinets
It will be hard for me to use anything else now! Thought I will use my Warwick on occasion too. I do love that bass as well. And it sounds excellent through the same rig. Maybe less massive low end but more detailed.

Had an SB-2T and it never gets a true P bass tone even though it looks the part. There are many P styles with J necks out there that will will get you what you want.
This popped up on my FB memories today. I played my SB2 5 years ago at a private gig. I don't think it sounds like a P, but it does sound pretty awesome, IMO. Fans of power pop, turn it up and take a listen:
I don't have an SB-2, but I have an SB-1, and I put an MFD into my '94 LB-100. Both of those get very much into "P-bass" territory, but they are a lot more aggressive. Deeper lows, brighter highs, more "muscular", growl more akin to a Jazz bass, etc. However, they can also be tamed quite a bit by rolling back the tone and volume knobs.
Obviously, neither have the J-pickup in the circuit, and they both have traditional LPF tone knobs, so that's going to be different. Still, you can roll off the volume and let the volume pot load the pickup, which will filter out some of the more extended high end and help tame the MFD. I've never had anyone complain that it didn't sound just like Fender. They record really well and definitely sit well in a mix live.
