I have a few of them here sitting around. I'll look at it again. If the stock tuners will cover the holes I'd have to make I might try it after all.

Yesterday evening I bought this G&L L-5500 on a whim to match my green and maple L2500. Looks like it was kept in good condition. I think EMGs will sound great through the B7K and Mesa 400+, and I wouldn't mind swapping out the electronics for an 18v system if it hasn't been done already. Hopefully I didn't just spend $700 on a paper weight, but the L5500 might end up being a fun modding project regardless.

I have some info about the Swirls....they've been discontinued for many years. They were problematic and fragile. And dazzlingly beautiful under lights. And really hard to photograph. I've never seen a pic that captured the dazzleocity of a G&L Swirl finish. I spent 30 minutes trying to photograph mine....fail. Here's my hack attempt.

Maybe G&L's most enigmatic bass with some features unique to the 5500. If you stand it up next to your L-2500 you'll notice it has a slightly different, sleeker body shape.
I love EMG's, my 5500 had the biggest sounding B string ever. Like a pipe organ on a strap. I'd still have one if they weren't so heavy. Be sure to post your impressions if/when you mod to 18v.

Will the control cavity be large enough to snap in a larger battery harness, or will I have to route another cavity for the 18v mod? I've seen some other L5500s around the internet, some with Seymour Duncans in them. Might be fun to experiment with a different pre.
My L2500 is about the same weight--a little over 10lbs. My left shoulder on my 150lb, 5'10" frame won't be thanking me much too much. I was actually looking for something lighter before I stumbled upon the 5500.

I'm certain that no routing is required to go to 18v. Others have done it that I know of. You can get easy DIY instructions from EMG.
The 5500 comes standard with the EMG BTC tone circuit. Vol/Bal/Bass/Treble. It's a monster setup with the big DC pickups.
Hey everyone, maybe someone could help me understand this. I was looking at M-2500's to buy today and I am confused. Looking at all the ones with swamp ash bodies. They were all between 9.5 and 9.8 lbs which is cool. I found one in Clear orange with a maple board, but it was 10.34 lbs. Whoa. I then saw the same one in clear orange with a rosewood board that weighed In at 9.6 lbs. I Emailed the store to see if this was a typo and they told me it is because of the wider pickups. Does this seem to make sense to anyone? Thanks Joe

If that were true, that would mean that adding 4 pickup poles and a bit of extra winding would have added more than half a pound of weight. Not on. JES has it.
I'm confused - don't all M2500 's have dual - coil humbuckers? If so why the extra parts?
Hmmm. Got it in my head the one was an M2000 and the other an M2500. Mea culpa I think.
