A drummer buddy of mine, his bass player friend and I were having lunch at a deli. We're all hopeless gear dogs, so the discussion inevitably turned to new gear we'd gotten--and various strategies for getting new stuff into the house without our wives noticing. Richie (the bass player) has this strategy: all his basses are Tobacco Sunburst. When a new one arrives, who could tell?
A buddy of mine is a radio ham, he gets all his gear passed is wife by getting another radio ham to bring it to his shack "for repair". She hasn't realised that none of it ever goes out again but most of it is a lot smaller than a bass.
This is a query for the SB-1 and SB-2 users out there. If you play flats, how do you maximize "grind" and "growl" or "roar" out of your front pickup? Think of the classic G&L split coil MFD wide open with rounds sound.
I'm currently in love with a set of TI Jazz flats on my bass, and they get SOME of that classic G&L grind and growl, but if I could get a little more in the mix, I would be thrilled. I switched from D'Addario XL Nickels. I don't miss the really high end and the G and D are much clearer in the mix, but I miss a bit of the roar on lower strings. In terms of sheer playing pleasure, there is no contest. After a 4-hour practice Monday my hands could have totally kept going.
In a mix the difference is subtle (since the high end is mostly occupied by guitar, cymbals and keys). But listening to practice recordings I can hear the difference and it's enough to for me to pine a little for more roar. I already use overdrive and fuzz but am always happy to fine-tune.
The bass is my custom Modulus/G&L/MF creation I posted above. The split coil pickup is in the classic precision position (a little closer in than on a real SB), and I have a splittable MFD humbucker in the bridge position. But I'm really going for "P-Bass on 'Roids" here.

Also, not to be predictable and a bore, but why not just tell your spouse? Surely she has something she likes to spend on? That's how we used do it and we never fight about my toys.
She just took up drums, though, so we are about to hit "peak household GAS" and may even have to take turns (she currently wants a $3k electronic drum set, but I'll indirectly benefit).
Everybody has options. Why not just stay single?

Just did my NYE gig with my new flaked - out SB1. Digging the tone and playability a lot . The factory strings are now officially toast : D And everybody loves the look. I am a bit bothered by noticeable neck - dive but am working on solutions. The very light weight makes it almost ok but it's bothersome. In general, it's a killer.
That maybe works for you but not all spouses are the same.
I never had that problem because bringing up 3 kids meant there was little or no cash left for toys, all my gig money got swallowed up by household and family bills.
Fast forward a few years and I'm a now a retired widower and the kids have moved away and I can afford almost any toys I fancy. All I have to do is justify them to myself, not always an easy task.
Been wondering about neck dive on these. Please keep us posted on what you figure out. Lighter tuners?
It is. 7 lb 12 oz. The tuners are as light as they'll get. I'll either add weight to the bridge end somehow or extend the upper strap peg but I'm not in love with that idea. I found that if I hung my cell phone to my strap things were just about perfect, about 1/2 lb added.
Get some hipshot ultralites. They will be lighter than the stock G&L tuners and they will make a difference.
The HB1 tuner sure doesn't look like it would be any lighter. The G&L tuners are already light, with aluminum pegs. The tiny, single screw Ultralights would be lighter but I really don't want to go that route.
