Not a Fender P bass. But I did a build around one in a P-like body. In a mix it is just amazing sounding.

The placement is exactly where the P pickup is on a P bass. It sounds amazing and I love it and want another.

Or I'll just break down and buy a SB-2

I have! I bought a few with employee discount. One pair went into a mexi squier.
A pair went into a Goya ( Korean pclone with double splits) this is when I worked there :) back in the 80s.

Man, if I played Mephisto's bass I'd need some Polaroid sunglasses and large tube of SPF 50 sun block for protection. As a bassist THAT is one hell of a great way to stand out on a crowded stage. :D

(i) The SB has *way* more output, even with pickup heights up and optimized on the LB-100. It's kind of shocking comparing the two basses. The SB kicks output butt.
(ii) The tone of the LB-100 is, in two words, simple and straightforward. At least with these strings, the sound isn't particularly harmonically rich. It's mid-forward and uncomplicated, maybe even a little bland.
(iii) The tone of the SB-2 using the neck pickup only is much richer and more complex. There's a toothiness to it that is very satisfying. Cranking the volume back to match the LB-100 dimed, it's still richer sounding: more P-ish but decidedly not like the LB.
(iv) Adding the SB's bridge pickup makes for a very warm, rich sound that is a world away from the LB.

My first impression (and I know some of you won't agree with this) is that the Chromes are not a great match for my LB at least. The somewhat bright, uncomplicated sound is not what I want in this bass. So tonight I'll put on the La Bellas which were conveniently (if you call a 2 week wait convenient) in the mail today. We'll see. I paid a lot of money for the new LB and it's pretty as all get out but, with Chromes on at least, the Tribute SB is way more interesting.

Hmmm...I may have misjudged the Chromes on the LB100. Put 'em on...meh...went upstairs to make a batch of giant meatballs, then came back an hour later and they sound altogether different. Warmer, more organic, harmonically richer—very nice in fact. That's so odd! Never noticed such a thing until now. Maybe some wrap had to rearrange a bit under tension.

Here's something, though. I put a G&L SB-1 pickup into an old Yamaha B-300 I had here at the house and, you know what, it sounds much better—but not like an SB. The sound is clearly not all in the pickup and that's useful to know. It's certainly not a weight/rigidity effect since the BB could be used to batter down a door.

I had a tribby SB2 a few years back that I modded with a stack knob setup on each shaft.
1) Vol/bal/pp for series of neck/bridge pups.
2) passive treble/bass cut circuit.

Hipshot ultralights and D-tuner.
It was fuel in the firesale to get my Dolphin.

It was super light, sunburst with a black guard. What a monster.

I have an 80s SB2 with the dual soapbar MFDs... I gotta take it out and fix the wiring.

LOL Thanks for the clarity. I had visions of 8x10 cabs decorating the walls eliminating any need for artwork along with a few 4x10s to sit on and as end tables. :jawdrop:

I have the distinct advantage of having been single for 20+ years so I can use my gear as decoration if I choose. ;)

Great! Now all I can think about is making an iron throne made of 8x10 cabs and the surrendered, broken maple necks of a thousand basses of my defeated enemies, roasted in the breath of Balerion the Black Dread. It's construction shall take fifty-nine days.

well it is exactly what you envisioned... I too live by myself, although I do have a few homes... but my man cave home is nothing but amps, guitars, cabs, drums, pa's, M16s, ak's, motorcycles, and horror movie mem. you're all welcome to visit anytime.
