G&L Club Part 7

There are a fistful of options G&L doesn't have that I'd really like that aren't big deals given their existing capabilities - I'd love a pickguard on a JB-2, and black blocks/binding as a neck option. I'd fork up the cash if they'd do it.

I had an LB-100 in Old School Tobacco Burst which isn't a listed finish. That was something I found out about via word of mouth. The same goes for the SB-1 Fretless I just ordered in Whiskey. I found out about the fact that it was available now on all guitars from seeing a post on Basses by Leo and they did a few guitars (that weren't the Jerry Cantrell) model in that finish.

Unfortunately for blocks and a pickguard on the JB-2, they probably will never do that. Binding they do do however.

Oh, the K-switching on this one wasn't done at the factory. Greg over at Rocketmusic did that for me, and I'm sure any decent tech would be able to do the mod on any existing M-series as well. Some info on the mod can be found here.

Hey everyone - not to sound ungrateful but I've discussed my issue on the bassesbyleo forum and have looked into both getting my neck planed and refretted and grabbing a new Tribute neck.

Therefore...

I have had the frets leveled, which has "somewhat" fixed the problem, but it's still not ideal and the neck may shift in the future. It doesn't really have enough fret left to level any further.

New tribute necks won't fit my mid 90's neck pocket - the heel is a little longer on the newer necks. G & L no longer produce necks to the older specs.

If I wanted to have my neck defretted, planed, refretted and refinished (it has a maple board) the cost is ridiculous - at least as much as say a new Warmoth neck (Warmoth, nor any other after market company other than Moses seem to offer a replacement and I really song like graphite necks).

So I guess I thought the odd 90's L2000 neck might pop up in good condition. The only other option is to get a local luthier make a neck from scratch, but again is expensive and "non original".

Long explanation sorry, just explaining why I initially asked about second hand necks. I am in a pickle for sure!

WHAT?! Awesome and congratulations. How'd you get the scraped paint binding on the black burst? They wouldn't do it for me when I asked about month ago. Went with a green burst instead. So envious.

From what I can tell, G&L do a few exceptions now and then from their "official" policy. I got both the binding on the MJ-4, and a quartersawn neck on the M2500. I've seen several instruments with blackburst and binding on their facebook-page lately, so I can't be the only lucky guy out there either.

Maybe they like Rocket Music better than Bass NW? Who knows...

They do coil tapping as standard on some 6-string guitars: US Legacy HB and Tribute Fiorano GTS.

I just wanted to drop a note to say what an extraordinary bass this L2500 is. I picked up a used one from 2012 from GC with a thin cream color alder body with vintage yellowed treated neck and while I'd never order a color combination order like that, I've fallen in love with it anyway.

Just about everybody will mention what a tone machine this bass is, but what I haven't heard is how much punch and presence all these different settings have, A lot of basses can twist EQ and settings around to sort of sound like this or that, but as the tone gets modified, it gets muffled and weak toward the extremes. That doesn't happen with this bass. Every place I go with settings it maintains a good deal of punch and drive. If anything with all active settings I'm cutting back with the treble and bass tone control. Only on passive is there any kind of drop off that needs some boost.

So strings may have something to do with it. I have E A D G GHS Brite Flats and maybe what they say about Alloy 52 and magnetic response with those big MFD pickups is all true. The B string on that set was dead (I'm told too much mass), so I'm using a LaBella quarter round there and it's fairly amazing how well that fits in with the other strings. At some point I may try a full set of the LaBella quarter rounds, but it's all good where it is. Just a great fit for fingerstyle.

so I'll just post this in the club thread to keep this on the down low.

Can you taking a picture of these in low lighting? Top one looks like blackburst but my blackburst L2000 looks black. The burst barely shows up and I was highly disappointed. Great instrument though.

HEllo everyone.
I'm with the idea of selling my ATK, and get other bass.
Actually my main bass is a Trib L2500, and i'm thinking of getting the Trib M2500.
Between both, justify to sell the ATK (MM style sound) and get the M2500, and then, having the L2500 and M2500?
I've heard Ed's mashup and i can ear some differences in sound, but justify to have both?

I have an m2500 and l2500. I'd say the l2500 has significantly more punch. If you have one you know what I'm talking about. The m2500 is a gentler animal, but not without its virtues and its own tamer presence.
I have DR Fat Beams on the m2500 and GHS GBriteFlats/ LaBella Quarter rounds on the L2500. So that alone has them well separated.

I don't know what justifies having both. The neck on the G&L 5 string suits me so well that, that alone is enough for me to justify having the two.

Thanks for the report. I agree... I just wish it had more than a 2 band & a MUCH better B string.

I own both. Honestly, when they are both jacked up live, playing with a loud drummer, I find that the difference are present but not that much.

I am a serious G&L fan, so I sort of justified having both. But I could live with just one.
