G&L Club Part 7

HI,
Another G&L beauty joining in! I was hesitating, looking for a JB but this one just popped up on ebay last night!
I think it's a 1 1/2" #8 neck (3 bolt neck, ash body, strap button missing).
But there will be 2 long weeks before she arrives...

Well I got the SB-2 back from the Music Techs in Manchester, NH. They did a great job as always. Full copper foil shielding and she's as quiet as a church mouse impaled on a door nail.

I'm still debating having them add a tone control. I'm just having a hard time finding specifics regarding which stacked volume pot and cap to get. It's been talked about so much that I feel like there's a lot to wade through. Though at the same time I feel like it doesn't really need it. I think I'd be adding it because I feel like I'm missing something that I'm not.

It's just luck. Apparently with usual necks they just run them through however the boards come out. A certain percentage of course just end up from the quartersawn part of the tree. If you pay for a quartersawn neck they make the effort to go to the pile and pick out a nice quatersawn one. If you don't pay then your bass just gets whatever is on the top of the pile at the time which is usually not quartersawn but still might be. I don't KNOW for sure this goes on at G&L but I think I once saw a post by someone at G&L that explained it this way. I've also seen quite a few cheap instruments like Squier and SX come through with quartersawn necks so I'm pretty sure this theory is probably correct. Except you can't ask Squier to go pick out a quartersawn neck for your Squier axe.

And speaking of G&L necks... Had a great "new neck day" today! G&L store had Tribute L2500 necks for sale for $30 each again! Last time I missed it but this time I jumped on it. They came today. JUST LOVE IT! Got 3 of them. Plan is to do a conversion to unlined fretless on my Tribby. Looking at grain one was flatsawn and the other two were semi-quartersawn. That means there was vertical grain on one edge tapering off to slanted grain on the other edge. One neck had a couple of very tiny dings on back of middle of neck, one had a tiny ding on back of headstock (barely visible) and the third was totally perfect.

I am SO stoked at putting three G&L 5er necks into my stock for only $30 each! Now to get out the steam iron and go for fretless!

Streamliner with lb-100 today was bliss!! Changed my pick up heights back to normal and like it better. Weird overtones are gone, i was way too close to strings with the pickups. The streamliner helps to tame it just enough that it can get that vintage vibe better than what i hear through my mixer. It punches hard with a full midrange, still had that grindy lows.

I hate that i practice through the Damn mixer and headphones, it sounds way better through my rig!

Dang, that looks sweeeet! That grain really pops with the blue.

Didn't they specify what neck it is?

Hard to tell for sure, but the taper doesn't quite look like a 1.5 nut. I could easily be wrong on that though.

SB-2s are great basses. If you ever get a shot at a JB, they are absolutely amazing.

I think an LB100 with a #8 neck would be about the only P bass that I'd ever consider.

I'm mostly a jazz bass guy except for my Tribute SB-2.

My JB is a piece of ergonomic and sonic perfection.

I had a PERFECT MIA J Standard 2014 someone sold for $700.... but the tone did not cut it for aggressive clear rock n roll with a pick. I knew I needed a P but can't play the regular spacing. I'm very happy with the G&L although I have a Big Al SSS incoming to be a change up. I'll be A\B reviewing those in particular soon

The #8 neck is perfect in my hands, especially with the Plek. I still suggest the rosewood on this guy vs the maple. The maple is VERY grindy man unless thats your target tone

That's a helluva deal for a 2014 jazz. I auditioned a new jazz before I got my G&L. It kind of lacked much character. Maybe it was the amp or setup, but it seemed rather dull.

My JB slams. It'll definitely do aggressive rock. Roll the tone back and you're deeply into funk territory.

on newer fenders, there's a large route where the neck pickup is like this

so you need to leave the pickguard on. then there's the older style that have the route tight around the pickup like this

sorry, just reread my post. really mispoke there. i meant if the neck pickup route is tight around the pickup, or large like the AMSTD body.

The color is Clear Blue on swamp ash. No information on neck from the seller.
The spine is there actually.

By the way, what brand are these strings with a lime green wrapping ?
