No, not myth; at least not from my research.
The slot does have a small effect on how the magenttic field lays around the pole pieces.

One way is a little more noicably brighter than the other.
Try it for yourself and see. Only takes a sec to do; just turn the volume on the bass off as you re-set them.

Cool. I'll play around and post my results here (or somewhere), assuming my ear can discern the difference (no promises).

There's been some chit chat about this over at BABP forum, but I think it's all "in thread," rather than "thread specific."

It's subtle, but I think I can hear it when I mess with it. A little sharper and more focused one way than the other.

Thanks guys, she is more beautiful in person of course.

Just a few observations and a couple of questions for you veteran G&L'rs. I was surprised by the weight of this bass, I believe the body wood is Swamp Ash; Am I correct? Also I'm a bit confused by the controls, the middle pot doesn't really seem to do anything, so far I can't seem to find any info on these controls, if anyone can provide a link or information I'd be most appreciative. Tone wise it's a little harsh on the top end for my taste but I really didn't spend any time trying to dial in the EQ on my GK MB150E, I was just happy to be playing my new bass. The setup on it's not to my liking at all and new strings are a must and I'm thinking I may go with flat wounds to offset some of the "zing", so I have lots to do to get her in shape.

Oh, may I have a number please so I can join the club? :)

If it is heavy it is probably Northern Hard Ash. My '86 L2000 is and looks very similar as far as grain pattern. Northern Ash is much heavier than Swamp Ash. My L2000 is too heavy for me to play for a whole 3 hour gig.
