Yeah, this bass is very heavy. My G&L's number 15 in my bass family and may well be the heaviest of the lot. I was also surprised by how thick the body wood is. I have a Status that I know is Swamp Ash (with a walnut top) and the grain's a lot wider so you are probably right about it being Northern Ash. That bass is also much lighter than the G&L.
It would be a physical challenge to play a 3 hour gig with this bass for sure, but as I'm new to fretless that won't be happening anytime soon, which of course is comforting news to my band mates.
Here's my G&L L-1500. Ash body, birdseye maple board, clear orange finish.

I really love that color. My L-1500 fretless is natural but to be honest I'd rather it was finished like yours.
Numbas seem to be a little slow.. been waiting in line myself.

this one would be about that old now; but it came from nyc so i doubt it's the one you saw.

I would do that same color scheme on an SB-2 also...............I really like the white with Rosewood!
Probably would look great with a tort guard too!

These are both USA models. The 3-tone burst is a bit older with a 3 bolt neck, ebony fretboard
and tone pot mod of V/V + T. A great sounding bass.
I got the other about 3 months ago. So far it is "The One" of all the G&L's that have passed thru my hands.
Transparent Butterscotch Blond over Ash, 6 bolt neck, Rosewood Fretboard, and a GOT neck that is superb.
Tone pot mod of V/T + V/T.
A killer bass that is getting all the play time, I have been considering putting the 3-Tone burst up for sale
to help fund a Lakland Skyline Decade.
