G&L Custom Shop Pricing

From what I've seen from others, this seems very reasonable. Especially if you consider brands that offer several tiers of instruments, from Chinese/Indonesian/Vietnamese sourced instruments all the way to American builds, this actually seems cheap. True MIJ Ibanez or ESP or Yamaha can get higher than this, much less Sadowsky, Fender CS, etc.

Maybe . . . . . we shouldn't broadcast this before G+L thinks, 'what they hey, he's right, we need to charge more !'

Question, can you get aged/relic finishes on US Production models? Got a real hankering for a aged Shell Pink bass :bassist:

Not normally on a run of the mill USA model. They have done some relic'd limited edition models in the past I think, but none are currently available.

You can get light or medium aging on a Custom Shop model for a small upcharge ($300 MSRP / $200 Street).

FWIW - I just placed my first Custom Shop order earlier this week for a guy who wanted a special Legacy HB guitar. So I should soon be added to the list of "Custom Shop" dealers, and I'll start getting some experience with the process. The first thing I've learned is that the usual 4-8 week USA delivery time does not apply. I've been told to expect more like 16 weeks for a Custom Shop piece.

Greg,
While I know it's (still) not currently in production as a standard model,
would it be possible to order an L-1000 through the Custom Shop?

That sounds like a definite maybe! Ron @ G&L says they are already doing one for somebody, so I suspect it's just a question of putting together an order. Some specs may be set in stone, but I won't know which ones until I ask them to change one of them. :)

Let me guess the first one you'd change... lefty? Damn, I'm good.

Another lefty here looking for a custom L-1000 :hyper:

If they are truly custom, I wonder if they can make an ASAT bass with a pickguard and control plate like their 6 string guitars.

I have been going back and forth with them. I can tell you for sure that they are most definitely not "truly" custom. They can't even do something as simple as selling me a single pickup JB, because apparently they are still tied to their CNC machines in the Custom Shop. For a while there, they were telling me I couldn't even get vintage frets or choose my neck profile (even though you could do all of these things with a standard production G&L). Bizarre. They finally started offering those things, thankfully.

Basically, Custom Shop gets you the option of a limited number of nitro colors (glad they finally published a list), a few extra body wood choices (though you could often order them anyhow by special request), a few more pickups to choose from, maybe a few different woods here and there. The whole hand sanded and thin urethane things mean nothing to me. Those aren't selling points. I want nitro in lotsa colors, and I want to be able to order custom pickup orientations and, at the very least, any neck/radius/frets you can get on a standard production line G&L. That's really the only advantage over a custom ordered standard production line to me. Now that they've finally got their $hit together a bit more compared to when I was first inquiring, I'll probably be ordering a JB and a Legacy. Not sure if the Legacy will be Custom Shop or standard production custom order, since the finish I want isn't available in nitro anyhow.

Sounds like we've got several lefty players interested in a Custom Shop L-1000. I'm sure I'll get a "no" if I ask them to make just one, so I've floated the idea of getting them to do the initial tooling work for that if I can secure 3 lefty orders. We shall see if that goes anywhere.

I'm also checking on the starting price of an L-1000 Custom Shop just so I can quote the things when needed.

I'm down for a CS Wunkay.
