And the winner is- Precision Bass Special. I went all over and tested everything I could get my hands on and this puppy sounds the best to me. I wanted to like the American Made version better, but I just didn't. During that process I tried out several other G&L's and their is definitely a signature sound to G&L that, in my opinion, is nowhere close to a P sound. I wanted to try a Sire, but those are on back order and I wouldn't have time to make my choice. Funny, I didn't even see this Precision Special, dude at the store plopped it down in front of me. The P/J combo is great. Huge, warm, fat sound but you can still get bright and slap. And half the price of the LB.

G&L L2000 vs P-Bass

Surf green metallic, blocks and binding, versatility = excellent choice !!
Trust me ..... I understand . When you want that FENDER sound , nothing else will do.
I'm a die-hard G&L fan, but I gotta admit, that's a great looking bass. Surf Green is the Bomb.
I recently got a 1996 G&L L2000 and have to say it's the best bass I've ever played; it never gets boring and sounds phenomenal in every tonal combination. Maple fretboard and flatwounds played with neck pick-up and it sounds BETTER than a p-bass
Leo designed it to be an improvement on his own old Pbass design. Have had a SB-2T (special order with a third pot for tone) since 2014, from Fullerton. It easily does a P - but not right out of the box and not with everything full on. I only use the V at full when I want a bit of natural overdrive. I also adjusted the pup height to be clean-and when the need to slightly overdrive is requires, turn the V knob the last 1/4” to 11. The single coil brings in the snap you may want for some lines. Otherwise the split MFD and T adjusted gives you from phat to snarl. In playability, sound and comfort my SB-2T has nearly left all my other basses just hanging on the wall.
I am about to order My L2000 from Fullerton. Of the options, I’ve added the split coil version for the pre-amp.
Learn your amp and train your fingers, palm scrub that pick or leave a “little nail” on you pinky for that light touch of definition. Or just get an old P at the price you want to play. I often have to double check that tone in my head, to make sure its not only the distant neighs of a Unicorn.

Boy each to their own, I think the EXL 170's stock rounds sound great on my G&Ls, and the newer the better. I dislike when the brightness dies, sometimes I use the NYXLs which seem a bit mellower but the new string sound seems to last longer. But then I dislike the dead thumpy flat wound tone. And I play out of a Fender Rumble also.
I have a Fender Precision, G&L L2K, and a G&L SB-1. I prefer the L-2000 most and never play with the settings much so that's not an issue for me. I run it almost always both pups, volume %100, tones usually both at %100 (sometimes back the treble off a little) in parallel or sometimes SCM, and passive.

Yes to the NYXLs. I did like using them and they were a good experience. For sure, strings are like people's favourite colours or lucky numbers. Thanks for the comment on your L2000, its reassuring. I'm pretty pumped for mine to get here after they make it. Months away, but worth each second.

Have you tried it in passive mode?
Closer to a P bass than all those Jazz basses people mention in every P/J comparison thread.
Congrats on your G&L build L-2000 ! May I ask what the specs are? I'm always curious of colors, options etc.

I’d wanted the open wood “binding” as I had ordered with my 2014 SB-2T, and vintage frets (a la Mr Sklar), but those options are now only available from their custom shop. I’d say G&L’s options to add your own preferences are still pretty amazing for someone to be able to order.
Fantastic company. My SB-2T has been an ass kicker since it arrived back then, eclipsing my other basses. So I’m not sure why I need another G&L… (insert goofy crazy face here).

I hope so! I went with okoume for its reported mellower tone, lows and wider midrange (not that anyone will tell it apart 
) - the L2K's preamp will add all the crystal zing I'll need, and although Ash has the aesthetics in the grain department, its a little sharper and sometimes you get surprised with weight. I'm requesting their Ruby Red for the clear red, if possible, because a bright candy apple ain't gonna cut it. It'll be several months from order time, which should be this week. Don't worry I'll be bagging' it up!
