I want to hear your experiences with it so far.

How long have you had your G&L?

Satisfied...? To what extent...?

Has it replaced other basses like Fender, Lakland and other custom Precisions?

Have you had the chance to directly compare it to CS Fender Precisions? How did it compare?

Or did you decide to sell it... If so for what reason?

Thanks

Mark

Well, I played every P bass I could find in stores for over a year. That included CS Fender P's. I even found a Sadowsky and Mike Lull to try. I never found anything that satisfied both my hands and ears. I went out on a limb an ordered the LB-100 last year. It arrived in Jan and it was perfect in every sense. I still feel that way. That said, I still want to try an F Bass and a Yamaha Attitude. :) I recently fell in love with a Dingwall Super P but am unsure about the fanned frets. I like the feel of them...actually, I really like the feel of them. I'm just not sure I like looking at them.

I just picked up a new LB 100 from the classifieds hear on TB and I love it a lot. My main bass was a G&L MJ 4 with a #12 neck so the feel of the LB 100 was exactly like my MJ. So for me having and active J and a Passive P bass has been heaven, there is really nothing I can not cover. I would say I am playing the LB more than the MJ, 60/40 split. I have owned Musicman, Fender and a few very expensive Warwicks. The G&L LB 100 is by far the best bass I have owned to date. I am not sure for the money you can beat G&L. I know some will argue for Carvin but I think G&L is still a bigger bang for the buck.

Stock, I did not see the need to try to improve on perfection. The bass Whisperer will be doing a review very soon but he has already called it a life time bass. He is the one that recommended the MJ-4 to me and it was great. Calling the LB a life time bass was good enough for me. After owning and Playing it I would have to agree. While there many great bass out there and many I would love to play and own as I said for the money I don't think you can find a better bass. Heck maybe at any price for that matter. If you buy one you will not regret it.

Mine (see avatar) is actually a Legacy, the name before they had to change it. Beautiful bass and have had it for several years. It came with "Schaller" pickups and while I like the tone, I have been thinking about putting originals in. You can get them from G&L.

Nice bass there.

Are you sure the Schallers aren't the originals?

I know there is a lot of great pickups. But the G&L LB pickups just work. As I said I have a MJ 4 and I also have 3k, one off custom bass that is just magical with Nordstrand pickups. The first time I played the LB at practice the sound guy and the everyone in the band said I should only play the LB. I would say they sound pretty dang good.

FWIW, the original run had a few different pickups in them, none of which were made by G&L. Most had a Gotoh, with white covers, but I've heard of instances of other brands being used as well.

I just picked an original one a few months ago. Late 93, with the Gotoh pickup. I love the feel on playability of it. Good weight, resonant, etc. Very happy.

That said, the tone is wired with a 0.022uF cap, which sounds great when the tone is all the way rolled off, but I hunk limits the range of the control, so I'll probably be swapping that out for a more traditional 0.047uF cap sooner or later.

I have yet to hear the new pickup, so I can't comment to that.

I do think G&L makes some of the best instruments in their respective price point, in terms of fit, finish, options. Lots of neck options, so you can really get one that you want.

I own a late 90s LB-100 with the stock white pickup. I'm not sure who made the pickup.

I would say the LB-100 has more of a pronounced mid-range than the Precision. The Precision has a much more beefy, fat, sound. Nonetheless, you can definitely cop all the classic P sounds with it - it's a great sounding instrument.

I believe the current incarnation have different pickups?

I haven't compared the pickups from the Legacy to those of the LB but about the pronounced midrange, that's the feeling I got when I tried a new LB-100 at the store. It felt like it had a bit of a Jazz bass bridge pickup bark mixed in it.
