I'm sure there are discussions, but this is *my* discussion. I am saving funds and have some $$ to put towards a P, but then a G&L LB-100 caught my eye. Just a little bit more than the P but greater savings. Also, I love G&L.
Saw a pal at a show yesterday (matinee shows FTW), and he said, "why not roll off the bridge pickup and use the SB-2 as a P bass?"
Well, I just don't know. So instead of spending a bunch of money on a bass, I decided to do an experiment. I'm not feeling well and had some time to kill, so for 11:30, I did some talking and A/B with my 93 SB-2 and a 99 Mexican P.
If you don't want to watch, well, here were my unscientific findings. YMMV.

In the end, I think another P is justified. The SB-2 can't really nail the P bass tones, IMO. There is decent tone, but it isn't the P sound that my Mexican P can produce.
Plus, GAS.
